Elementary students may be little, but their feelings can be big. Learning to manage these big feelings in a way that is safe and socially appropriate can be a challenge, especially for students who have experienced childhood trauma. As their school counselor, I have been working with my students to help them name their feelings, which can make uncomfortable feelings feel less scary. We have also worked on accepting feelings, because feelings are neither good nor bad—they are just a normal part of being human! With that in mind, we continue our work to include managing those feelings in a way that is helpful rather than harmful. I want my students to understand that feelings do not control them...they have some control over their feelings and behavior. That is where the Calm Down Kits come in! The kits will contain fidget toys, stress balls, play-doh, and objects and reminders to help students remember and practice the coping skills that they are learning during classroom guidance lessons and small group counseling. My goal is for each classroom and other area where students spend time will have a Calm Down Kit, so students will be able to access these tools wherever and whenever they need them.
