Picture Books That Bust Gender Stereotypes
Funded Jun 26, 2024In our kindergarten classroom, it is important that everyone is able to be who they uniquely are. I can help to insure that by fostering an environment that is unencumbered by gender stereotypes. One way I can do this is by filling our room with picture books that show students of any gender engaging in the same kinds of activities. When students see themselves represented in the pictures in our books it helps them to feel safe and comfortable.
This time around, with this specific book project, I wanted to gather more books that show girls enjoying activities that have traditionally been thought of as boy activities because I have a couple students this year that I knew would be excited to see their interests represented in the books we read.”

Funded Mar 28, 2024One of my students' favorite activities at our classroom art table is drawing. They were so excited to get brand new Sharpie markers and colored pencils to work with. It's so fun to see their creativity come to life so brightly and boldly with these materials.
Recently my students have been wanting to make cards for people, so I'm going to utilize that interest to help build excitement around adding words (writing) to their beautiful drawings. All of these drawing/writing supplies will continue to make a great impact on my students.”

With a Microscope, Exploring the Natural World Is Nearly Unlimited
Funded Jun 15, 2024Thank you so very much for your generous support toward funding this incredible digital microscope for my kindergarten students! I cannot wait to see the faces on my students next year when they get to see microscopic things even better. Having a robust, engaging science lab area in our classroom is so important for my little scientists.”

Beautiful Books to Assist Young Scientists With Looking Closely
Funded Aug 3, 2023Thank you so much for your incredible generosity in donating to fund these beautiful books to help my amazing kindergarten scientists learn about and practice their observation skills. My students loved looking through the books on their own and then were delighted to have me read them to the class aloud. These books helped spark deep discussion about what we observe around us and how important the skill of observation is for a scientist. The look and find books were especially engaging for my students, and they were having fun without even realizing they were using their powers of observation at first.”

Funded Aug 15, 2023Thank you so much for your generosity in helping to fund this project to help us with our line study in class. Being an arts magnet school, we love to help the students explore the elements of art. The element of line is one that we focus on in kindergarten. We studied line in different ways--with colored pencils and rulers, with tape, with ink rollers, and with strips of paper. It is always so exciting to see what the kids create with these materials. As Jean Michel-Basquiat said, "Every single line means something."”

Decodable Books Make All the Difference
Funded Jan 19, 2024When it comes to best practices in helping children on their learning to read journey, having books for them to work with that are decodable is paramount. Decodable means having only words in them that the students have learned and/or are learning the phonics skills for, so it is vitally important that I have many different books available in the classroom that cover all the different phonics skills that we learn about in kindergarten.
The kids loved getting these new books to read. The colorful pictures and fun characters are very engaging. Thank you so much for your generosity!”

Black Representation Matters!
Funded Feb 20, 2024Thank you so very much for helping to fund these beautiful picture books to bring more black representation into our classroom literature. My students loved being read these new books!
During Black History Month, in addition to reading these new books, we also read books about famous black artists like Alma Thomas, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jacob Lawrence, Noah Purifoy, and Romare Bearden and the students were inspired to create art like these important artists.
We showcased their work in a Black History Month Art Gallery that we invited the parents to come to. In the photos attached, you will see my students proudly displaying their work.”

Celebrating Lunar New Year & Other Asian Heritages Through Stories
Funded Jan 29, 2024My amazing kindergarten students loved all of these beautiful Lunar New Year and Asian Heritage picture books you funded for our class! Through hearing these stories, everyone in our class learned about Lunar New Year and my Asian students felt seen and heard.
Reading these stories inspired the students to create their own Lunar New Year Parade, so we did another Donor's Choose project to gather materials to make pellet drums, streamer sticks, and lion and dragon puppets. We invited the whole school to come out to celebrate with us.
Thank you so much for generously donating to fund these beautiful books for my current class and for all my classes to come!”

Creating Our Own Lunar New Year Parade
Funded Jan 22, 2024Our Kindergarten Lunar New Year Parade was a great success! As you'll see in the photos, between our three kindergarten classes the students made pellet drums, streamer sticks, and lion and dragon puppets for the parade.
The kiddos were so excited to receive all the materials needed to make their parade favors and enjoyed being read the books, we also got, to learn all about Lunar New Year. In addition to the read alouds, our Asian students who celebrate Lunar New Year got to tell us their stories and teach us about their traditions.
We invited the whole school to come watch our parade and celebrate with us!”

Looking Closely Is an Important Scientific Skill
Funded Aug 11, 2023Thank you so much for generously donating towards funding this project for my precious kindergarten students!
Every year when I start a new school year with a new batch of incredible students, I ask them what they would like to learn throughout the school year (it is so important that they have a say in their education, as well). This year's group of kids collectively had such an interest in science, so it was so important to me to bring some more hands on science materials for them to engage with during our Explore Play Time. As you'll see in these photos, they are loving these materials!”
