"Does this have to be colored?" "Can I print this photo for my project?" "I love what you created - can I display it as an example for other students?" Some may take for granted the idea that English class is all about reading. It's not! My students are constantly creating excellent work that involves multimedia projects that demonstrate not only their understanding of a text, but also reinforces the truth that we all learn in different ways. My 7th grade students, for instance, create visual representations of what they read for their monthly book choices along with a written component. We also use Microsoft Publisher to create root word brochures during our mini-unit dealing with vocabulary, and the students print these brochures out to teach their root word to their classmates. Projects like these provide them the opportunity to demonstrate what they've learned in creative and innovative ways. Projects like this can also reveal a depth of understanding that tests do not. We ask a lot from our students when we expect them to rely solely on their imagination to create a visual of what they read or write in class. I'd like to be able to support their creativity and provide them with resources that extend past the black and white pages of a book.
