Research has shown time and time again that if students interact with information in multiple modalities, their retention of the material dramatically improves. In order for students to truly understand what we need them to know, they must hear it, see it, AND work with it using their hands. That can be hard to do with literature. However, when I discovered interactive literature notebooks (ILN) about six years ago, I found a way for my students to write, reflect, and take notes in a creative way. To make this happen, all we needed was a composition book, coloring utensils, glue, and scissors. Our ILNs are an integral part of our classroom culture. When Hurricane Florence passed through our area, many students lost their ILNs when their homes flooded. Since then, we have been working on rebuilding our ILNs, but it has taken a toll on our supplies. Some of my students still do not have their notebooks entirely rebuilt and are using notebook paper rather than composition books. My few bottles of glue are depleting fast and the students share what few coloring supplies I have left. We are in need of a RESTART so this important piece of our classroom culture can be rebuilt.
