  • Fractured Fairy Tales on Stage

    Funded Aug 13, 2021

Thank you so much for funding our fractured fairy tale project. We had so much fun reading fairy tales, changing the fairy tales around, and then acting them out on stage.

We also looked at the point of view, setting, plot, as well as fairy tale conventions such as they lived happily ever after. My students started asking questions like "what would happen if the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears was told from the perspective of baby bear?" And, "what would happen if Little Red Riding Hood was told in the wild west?" This project was a great diversion to encourage students to use their imagination, the writing process, and their performance skills all at the same time. Thank you for bringing this project to life and making learning fun for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Swedberg

  • Developing a Music Technology Course

    Funded Jun 22, 2021

Thank you for your generous donation to our project. I have done many of the online trainings on Midnight Music and have gotten many great teaching ideas from the teacher forum. In my music technology class we just finished a project-based learning project to make stop-motion videos. Students spent three weeks moving Legos, StikBots, and clay to create 300-400 pictures for each movie. I was amazed at their attention to detail as well as their vision to create a storyline. They spent the next week editing photos, adding sound effects, and adding sound. We ended the project with a popcorn and movie viewing party. Students watched the videos and gave feedback to other groups or completed a self evaluation. Thank you for bringing fun learning to our classroom!”

  • Mentoring New Teachers

    Funded Apr 1, 2021

Thank you so much for your generous donation to this project. I was so lucky to be a student teacher mentor. I remember my first year teaching. It was scary and overwhelming. I was able to coach and mentor my student teacher as she started her journey in education. Most teachers quit the profession within five years of becoming a teacher and I feel like I was able to give my student teacher the best start to her teaching career. She started her first teaching job this August and has had a great start to her year. You played a big part in that success.”

  • 2D to 3D Cardboard Instruments

    Funded Apr 1, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting our project. The students learned many skills and were able to apply that knowledge in a fun way. Students worked on a model, making an object at a different scale, learned about the characteristics of different instrument families, and learned how those instrument families produce different sounds. Students loved getting to create something in music class. The cardboard knives were easy to use and I ordered anti-cut gloves to protect their hands while cutting.”

  • Ukuleles For Music Class

    Funded Apr 1, 2021

Thank you so much for donating to our project. I now have twenty-six students ukuleles and cases. During our ukulele unit, we learned how to tune the ukuleles. The strings are tuned to G-C-E-A. We learned 5 songs using the open strings. Finally, we learned how to play a ukulele scale. Our scale used notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. Finally, we learned three very popular chords to play on the ukulele. The chords we learned are C, F, and G7. With those three chords, we can play hundreds of songs. My students have loved learning about the ukuleles and learning how to play them. I have had several students tell me they want their own ukulele. This unit was so fun. Thank you so much for getting our ukulele project up and running. We have had so much fun!”

  • Awesome Books with Musical Hooks- Part 4

    Funded Oct 19, 2020

Thank you so much for helping me to get the materials I needed to teach a love of music and literacy. I used several of the books while teaching my 2nd and 3rd grade students songs for their music program.

This week I started my bunny and spring songs and my kids have loved I Love the Mountains and I'm Bringing Home A Baby Bumblebee. We also made egg shakers and sang Little Bunny Foo Foo. This would not have been possible without your generous donation to fund our project. The best part is these books will be used and loved for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Swedberg

  • Awesome Books With Musical Hooks- Part 3

    Funded Oct 16, 2020

My students were so excited to get all of the read-aloud books and puppets. Our new school mascot is the lion and the kids named the lion puppet "Larry the Lion."

I have been using these books during our weekly music lessons. Two of our favorite songs are "The Wheels On the Bus" and "Old McDonald Had A Zoo." I also have a fun day planned for the book "Wet Dog." We will be learning the song Bow, Wow, Wow with a dance and pretend to be dogs that day!

I am planning to use these resources in the future and thank you so much for believing in me and my students.”

  • Virtual Music Program Supplies

    Funded Oct 5, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our project. Because of the guidelines in my district, I was unable to have a large group music program. Instead, I taught each class 2-3 songs, created speaking parts, and had props for the students to use. My 2nd and 3rd grade students just finished recording our songs. I am now editing all of the videos together. This would not have been possible without your donation and the supplies from this grant. I know the parents will appreciate being able to hear their students sing, and I know the students were so excited to perform.”

  • Mystery Student Reward Candy

    Funded Oct 1, 2020

My kids have loved getting the stickers and candy your generous donation funded. I was able to offer treats to students during remote learning. I wrote notes and taped the candy to the note. Then students were able to pick up learning packets and their reward when we were completely virtual.

Now, that we are back to in-person learning, my students try really hard to earn these rewards and I have very few discipline problems during class. Students love the mints, Starbursts, and stickers. It is also nice to be able to offer a non-food reward for students who are unable to eat candy for medical reasons.”

  • Circus Fun Music Program

    Funded Jan 23, 2020

My students were so excited to get all of the circus music and items for our circus program. We had spent hours learning the music so that we could add speaking parts when we came back from Spring Break.

Unfortunately, we never got to return from Spring Break and all schools in the state of Kansas were closed for the remainder of the year. Teachers, students, and families had to quickly pivot to learn at home. This was the first time, in eighteen years, that one of my music programs was canceled and not rescheduled. While your donation did not have the impact you or I were intending, please know that it was appreciated. Please know that I sent the music in an online lesson and asked my students to sing for their families at home. I will use these resources in the future and thank you so much for believing in me and my students.”
