My students must keep up with the latest advancements in education to spark an interest in reading, geography and civics. Education is changing every single day, and so are the interest of my students. Students in my classroom like to play games and read about zombies, superheroes and villains. Graphic novels have increased in popularity. “Dead Reckon” is part of the "Zombie-Based Learning" Geography and Civics curriculum. Using a zombie apocalypse narrative to teach geography and civics aligned to National Geography and Civics standards, the curriculum is crafted for grades 4-8 to include Project-Based Learning into the instruction. Project-Based Learning is a powerful approach to learning–encouraging active engagement, problem solving and critical thinking skills to help students master concepts more deeply. Students will study the geography, regions, themes of geography and mapping to determine outbreak. Then, through differentiated projects and reading the graphic novel, "Dead Reckon", they will go through the stages of creating a settlement, setting up a government and determining the laws. This class set of the graphic novel will supplement the geography and civics curriculum as well as provide a cross-curricular opportunity for reading. This will take students from geography to civics in a learning style they can get excited about!
