Students who attend my school are predominantly poor, and many are learning English as a second language. As a result, they may be the only English speakers in their homes. This makes it very difficult for children who are learning how to read, because they have no one with whom they can practice their new reading skills and have no fun books of their own to practice. Read to My Buddy will provide students the opportunity to read books they want to read. Primary students are paired with an upper elementary student who listens to them read, or, in the case of our kindergarten students, reads to them. Instead of going to recess after they finish their breakfast, students will come to where the books are and be paired together to read. As the younger students gain skills, being read to will gradually shift to reading to the older student.
