"Reading is not only the fundamental skill that underpins all learning, but is also the key to developing empathy and compassion (Miller and Sharp, 28)." More than ever our students need to see themselves in text and learn tolerance and empathy for classmates whose life experiences are different than their own. In order to nurture these traits, "Every child deserves to see themselves, and their experiences, reflected in the books that they read...it is also important for them to see the experiences of others in those books (Miller and Sharp, 28)." One way to do that is to reflect on the texts being offered in the classroom and in school. After going through my classroom library, I noticed a gap in texts in which black males break the stereotypes that society has given them and that offer the perspective of what it is like to be young and black growing up in modern-day America. Through careful research and consideration, I have created a wish list of texts that will offer text options where students may see themselves in the main character, that will contribute to creating a more inclusive classroom culture and that will work to educate non-black students in the classroom. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
