Our students use a reading program where they get to choose books on various topics and levels of difficulty to earn points to graduate to the next reading level. Most of my students do not have the money to buy books needed to move themselves up the reading levels as they come from low income households. One of the unfortunate realities of teaching at an underperforming/underfunded public school is that many of these children do not receive any help or concern at home. Many of these children live in weekly rentals and hotel rooms, so their living situation is uncertain. This school and this classroom is the only opportunity these students have in being able to sit down and read a good book. It is exciting to see students thrilled about reading and to see them embrace this reading program. As a first year teacher my classroom library is tiny. They are not being held back by their lack of enthusiasm for reading, but by the lack of books available to them. My list of books will help students move up the reading levels, give them exposure to many different interesting topics, as well as provide multiple copies of the same book so that several students can participate in small group reading circles.
