  • Books For Our New Teachers

    Funded Nov 12, 2024

A love of reading and literature can be transformative, but it’s hard to spark that love without access to the right books. Thanks to your contribution, the new 11th-grade library at our school will now include copies of Macbeth—an essential text for fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper understanding of classic literature.

For years, I’ve seen how a lack of resources limits students' ability to engage with important works, and this donation helps bridge that gap. By providing these books, you are not just filling a library shelf—you’re opening doors for students to discover new ideas, develop their voices, and experience the timeless value of Shakespeare’s words.

Thank you for helping make this vision a reality. Your generosity is helping us create opportunities for learning and growth that will resonate far beyond the classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shitama

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom! Your generosity will help enrich my students' school experience. My students are already looking forward to the challenge of new cubes and puzzles. We're starting our new book unit in November. You are part of what of what makes my classroom a nice place to be.”

  • A Classroom Library Is a Beautiful Thing.

    Funded May 31, 2024

Thank you for helping me provide meaningful and engaging literature to all my students. This selection will take us to 1860s Russia, 1970s Egypt, and present day California. I can't thank you enough for your generosity! I am extremely grateful, and my students are going to be very excited about this addition to our classroom library.”

  • IB For All

    Funded Nov 3, 2023

I am writing to extend my deepest gratitude for the incredible generosity you have shown in donating books to our classrooms. The impact of your gift extends far beyond the pages of the books themselves; they are tools for learning, windows into different worlds, and stepping stones for our 11-12th graders to develop into inquisitive, knowledgeable, and empathetic humans. Your generosity has also alleviated the constraints of tight classroom budgets, ensuring that our students have access to a diverse and inclusive range of literature. In a time where educational resources are precious and often scarce, your support has been a beacon of hope and progress in our daily educational journey.

We are looking forward to a year filled with literary adventures and learning, all thanks to your thoughtfulness and support. You have shown us the profound impact of community and the powerful difference we can make when we come together for the sake of our children’s future.

Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity and support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shitama

  • The Color Purple: Building Our Classroom Library

    Funded Mar 16, 2021

Thank you so much for your donation. I truly appreciate your generosity. I believe in the power of books to make us better, wiser people while providing windows to the world.

I’m looking forward to reading The Color Purple and Survival in Auschwitz with my students after spring break.”

  • Going the Distance: Bridging Gaps in Distance Learning

    Funded Aug 31, 2020

Because of your donation, I have been able to provide optimized teacher instruction and lessons during the pandemic. Teaching hybrid isn't easy but my fancy tech equipment and second monitor has improved our teaching and learning. My in person students enjoy seeing the faces of their friends at home every day. We love seeing and greeting their pets too--projecting the Zoom class meetings would not be possible without my second monitor. Additionally, I am able to teach important test strategies and reading annotations using the cute ladybug document camera. It looks like we are staying hybrid for the rest of the year so the equipment will continue to be used daily. In fact, I am confident that the document camera and second monitor will remain useful in my post pandemic teaching. Your support in this crazy year is very appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shitama

  • IRead with IPad

    Funded Apr 16, 2013

Our Reading class is immensely grateful for your support. We are incorporating iPads into our weekly synthesis readings to give students access to current, relevant and thought provoking topics. Using iPads in our instruction allows us to use current and multi-media materials in lessons--some readings are even as current as the day of the lesson. Having iPads in the classroom has also allows us to use Edmodo, and online learning community, for discussion threads and assignment posts. Student engagement increases as they use technology with reading and we also feel great about using less paper! Our goal is to have at least 15 iPads for our 11-12 grade Intensive Reading classroom--our sincere thanks for your help in bringing us closer to this goal.

Predominantly African-American from single parent homes with poverty level income that qualifies for free lunch, most of my students in Intensive Reading have no computer or Internet access at home. They are bright, passionate students who have much unrealized potential. All the young men and women in my class are resistant to reading after years of frustration and discouragement associated with remedial reading classes. Although Eastside High School hosts the nationally ranked International Baccalaureate (IB), the school is located in a lower-income area so all the "major program" students living in the poor side of town attend EHS. My students are enthralled with the trappings of technology and all the newest gadgets. Bringing iPads into the classroom is an opportunity to pique their interest in reading and show them that our community has taken an interest in their present and future academic success.
