  • Sports Equipment for Building Friendships and Fun

    Funded Aug 15, 2024

Our school is home to a vibrant and diverse group of students who come from various backgrounds. Despite the differences in their personal lives, our students share a common love for play and social interaction. Our goal is to provide our students with the necessary recess equipment to engage in active play, foster new friendships, and promote physical health and social skills. We aim to create an inclusive and safe environment where students can thrive by replacing our current outdated and insufficient recess equipment.

Recess is a critical time for them to build friendships, learn teamwork, and develop physical skills.

To make recess a time of excitement and growth, we need the following equipment: sports balls and carrying bag (soccer balls, basketballs, and footballs), kickball bases, parachute with handles, Slam Ball set, as well as reusable gel ice packs and bandages.

With this new equipment, we will be able to organize a variety of games and activities that cater to all students' interests and abilities. The sports balls will encourage traditional team sports, the kickball bases will facilitate structured kickball games, the parachute will provide collaborative fun, and the slam ball set will introduce a new, exciting game. Additionally, having gel packs and bandages readily available will allow us to manage minor injuries promptly, ensuring that students can return to play safely.”

Today, teaching means preparing our students for jobs that do not even exist yet. The traditional job markets are evolving and becoming very technology-driven and dependent. Industries outside of technology such as: finance, manufacturing, health care, information technology (IT), data analyst, artistry and design, and engineering now have job demands with computer coding skills. This shift has made coding a core skill for our students to be successful in their future. In class my students have been exposed to a very basic level of coding using a free educational website. With these Dash and Dot robots my students will be able to make a physical connection of coding and begin their journey of robotics. Robotics is then offered as an extracurricular next year as a 5th grader, in intermediate, as well as at the high school and collegiate level here in Hilo. Please help me prepare my students for a successful and meaningful future.
