I work for a school that has a 50% Hispanic population. Reading is a struggle for many of my ESL babies. Listening while reading will help with the following: fluency, sight word recognition, endurance of reading, comprehension, and confidence. Let's not forget it's just fun, too!! I want to build the confidence my students deserve to help them become successful readers. With so many of our children coming from Hispanic backgrounds, many of their parents do not speak English. This makes reading even tougher for our babies. We have several resources to help, but I have witnessed the listening/learning centers first hand and the success they bring, especially to students who tend to get distracted easily. I wholeheartedly believe in this center and would love to have it as part of my classroom. When I was at another school district this was implemented and the children got very excited when it was their turn. Yes, they did memorize the books, but they also memorized the words which helped them add to their vocabulary. It was a blessing for AR points. Many of our children never get more than 10 AR points because they lack the reading skills to advance. This will allow them to feel successful, something we all need and want. I know this is an expensive endeavor and normally I try to do these things myself. Unfortunately, thanks to this past years flooding, most of my kiddos came with little or no supplies and I funded a great deal of these items out of my own pocket. With our own home flooding, it has left me with a smaller budget this year for additions to my classroom. If I didn't believe in this center I would not ask for it. Your consideration is deeply appreciated. Thank you.
