“This is the real secret of life -- to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” ― Alan Watts Play is a powerful tool for engagement and learning within the classroom. Students can pretend to be doctors, scientists, and teachers, engage in STEAM activities, manipulate parts, and more. Their imagination is the only limit. My students need spaces that allow them to explore and imagine. By providing them with a pretend play center, students can manipulate real-life items that they would see in real life. It will be changed out monthly; a post office, medical center, veterinarian office, even a paleontology dig. The shelf will be the basis of our tinker lab. It will be filled with antique items such as typewriters, video cameras, phones, and more that students can take apart and investigate. During dramatic play time, various types of child development take place including cognitive, social/emotional, and scientific reasoning. As a result, students understand their place in the larger global community. They can use these spaces to practice communication skills, cooperation, problem solving, and tap into building and creating. These skills will be critical as they progress through school and into the world in which they live.
