Our state offers a wonderful Social Studies curriculum built around various primary sources where students get to think critically about the time period and engage in great debates about history. It is my goal this year to give the students an out of classroom experience where they can see firsthand, artifacts from famous historical figures such as George Washington and his tent from the American Revolution or Betsy Ross's house where she sewed the first American flag.
In order for my students to apply their knowledge and skills in the "real world" they must be able to make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the life outside of school.
All students deserve a change to experience a day outside the classroom so they can see the relevance of what they have learned. This trip might encourage students to ask bigger questions and raise the important issues that push their in school learning toward meaning and purpose in the real world.
