Flexible seating is the first step toward independent learning. Rather than being told where to sit or what to do, flexible seating provides students voice and choice and to take ownership over their learning. Flexible seating allows the student to wiggle and wobble while still learning in a modality that best suits them and their learning style! Flexible seating also allows for better collaboration, connection, and community in the classroom.
In addition to a boost in academic performance, researchers have found that the top ten benefits of flexible seating are choice, physical health, comfort, community, collaboration, commitment to learning, communication, sensory input, and fun! Flexible seating allows students the autonomy to make choices that will benefit their learning and lives. Flexible seating also supports physical health. Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Overall, flexible seating will benefit students and make learning better for all!
Life for Life is creating a student-centered elementary school that focuses on hands-on learning, project-based learning, innovative technology, self-awareness, mindfulness, student voice, and choice. Flexible seating blends very well with these beliefs and will benefit the students. Please help me create a flexible seating classroom that will develop independent, successful, 21st-century lovers of learning!
