Funded Nov 1, 2019On behalf of my students and myself, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for providing the resources that allowed us to start this new journey. We are currently at the stage of learning how to properly operate and care for the sewing machine. We will start to take on small group projects from the sewing books provided, once students understand how to use the machine properly. Students (Devon and Keiopia) can be seen reading the manual in the picture provided as they attempt to thread the machine. Students are taking turns threading the machine. We had a guest (Ms. Richardson, can also be seen in a picture) in one of our sessions, where she showed students how to use the settings (dials) on the machine.
First response in revealing the sewing machine was a strange one for me. I grew up in a country where almost every home had a sewing machine. If you didn't have one, you knew someone who had one. For our students, just unboxing the sewing machine was a lesson in and of itself. Many of our students have never seen a sewing machine before and this gave them the opportunity to interact with one on a personal level. One of my students in particular, Devon was very excited to set it up (he can be seen in the picture provided). He eagerly took the manual and began reading it. Him and I later thread the machine in order to start using it.
My students and I meet once weekly, which does not give us a lot of time to tackle big projects. However, the sewing books provided have a lot of simple ideas and projects that can be accomplished within the next 2 months. Our students currently learn on a learning curve, where some students are a bit ahead of the rest. I will be using this to create small groups to tackle projects like sewing throw pillows and other student selected projects. Again, we are very grateful for your contributions and hope to get a few more machines to increase the productivity of our classroom.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Salim
