  • On Bended Knees

    Funded Nov 24, 2023

On behalf of my students I thank you for your generosity. Your donation has made a huge difference in the everyday lives of my students. Some students have personal obligations that interfere with them being able to come to school on time and eating breakfast. This impedes their ability to focus and partake in classroom activities and discussions.

My students know now that they always have a place to get warm tea and a snack, even if it is for a limited time. I get students that use the electric kettle to warm up water so that they can have some tea and some that even use hot water to cook their Ramen noodles. I'm so grateful to be able to provide for my students and they are grateful that it is available to them.

None of this would be possible without your gracious gift and we are very thankful that you chose our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Salim

  • Supply and Demand

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

I would like to thank you for your generosity. Your donations are being used to make a big difference in the lives of my students - from providing a pencil to take notes to making color copies that allow my students to differentiate organelles and subatomic particles without having to differentiate the different shades of gray/black.

My students are very grateful for your donations each time they receive a color copy of a handout or they take a pencil from the bin or even use the electric sharpener. Without your donations my students would still be looking at black/white copies and in some cases they wouldn't even been able to get black and white copies.

The laminating pouches are being used to create passes, stations handouts that will be reused in different lessons and labels for the desk and word wall.

Again on behave of my students I would like to thank you for giving to our classroom. It is because of amazing people like you that we are able to provide for our classroom and attempt to bridge the gap in education that exist in low income neighborhoods.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Salim

  • Reading and Annotating Made Easy

    Funded Dec 4, 2020

Thank you very much for you generous offer. My students and I appreciate it so much. The printer allowed me to make packets for my students. A lot of students did not complete work online because they don't understand how to use google suite and will most likely submit blank responses. If we were in school, we would have "differentiated" classwork for students to meet their needs. However, this is a lot more difficult as we are remote. The printer allowed me to make printed copies for specific students which was distributed to students.

Unfortunately, as a remote teacher I am not allowed in my school building. Therefore, a colleague graciously collected and distributed the packets for me. Students were instructed to either write on the packet, take pictures and submit their assignments or to write directly in their notebooks, which is more desirable.

This gave students a chance to complete the work who would not have done so if they were solely dependent on the computers. My students and I are very happy with the additional options the printer gave me. Again, we thank you for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Salim

  • Model Til You Get It!

    Funded Nov 30, 2020

Thank you very much for you generous offer. My students and I appreciate it so much. The ipad and stylus has made modeling a lot easier for me, allowing me to write on the ipad with the stylus the same way I would have written on a whiteboard in the classroom. This gave students some form of "normal" as we are able to continue practicing some of the routines we had in the classroom. It also makes explaining Chemistry a lot easier since I am able to solve problems directly on zoom meetings, which I could not have done without the ipad.

This gave me the option to log into our meetings using the ipad along with my school computer, using the school computers to keep track of students and hold them accountable, while using the ipad to write on the screen. This helped to create a "normal" classroom where we modeled, students helped me to solve problems and it helped to build teacher-student relationship as it encourages students to respond and more students are more likely to participate in the right environment.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Salim

  • A Stitch in Time

    Funded Nov 1, 2019

On behalf of my students and myself, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for providing the resources that allowed us to start this new journey. We are currently at the stage of learning how to properly operate and care for the sewing machine. We will start to take on small group projects from the sewing books provided, once students understand how to use the machine properly. Students (Devon and Keiopia) can be seen reading the manual in the picture provided as they attempt to thread the machine. Students are taking turns threading the machine. We had a guest (Ms. Richardson, can also be seen in a picture) in one of our sessions, where she showed students how to use the settings (dials) on the machine.

First response in revealing the sewing machine was a strange one for me. I grew up in a country where almost every home had a sewing machine. If you didn't have one, you knew someone who had one. For our students, just unboxing the sewing machine was a lesson in and of itself. Many of our students have never seen a sewing machine before and this gave them the opportunity to interact with one on a personal level. One of my students in particular, Devon was very excited to set it up (he can be seen in the picture provided). He eagerly took the manual and began reading it. Him and I later thread the machine in order to start using it.

My students and I meet once weekly, which does not give us a lot of time to tackle big projects. However, the sewing books provided have a lot of simple ideas and projects that can be accomplished within the next 2 months. Our students currently learn on a learning curve, where some students are a bit ahead of the rest. I will be using this to create small groups to tackle projects like sewing throw pillows and other student selected projects. Again, we are very grateful for your contributions and hope to get a few more machines to increase the productivity of our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Salim

I teach an elective class and I'd like to make electives fun and easy. While teaching my students life skills, I love to give students the opportunity to learn in a different manner than they do all day. More hands-on and less "let's memorize." One of the objectives of this class is to teach students a skill and having a finished product at the end of the year where students can see a project through from scratch is the best motivation there is. Let's give these students the push they need to be successful in life. At the end of this class students will have sewn something useful that they will keep as a memorandum and a reminder of what they learned. Let's help at least one student realize the potential they possess and watch them blossom into the unimaginable.
