I loop with my 2nd and 3rd grade students. We are in a city that contains many students from European descendants. I have many books in which these children can relate. Over the past five years I have begun to get a more ethnically diverse group of students and I am struggling to afford books so that ALL children can identify with characters that look like they do. I know that when children feel like they are important enough to be included in books, it raises the self esteem of the child, encourages him or her to read more, and will allow the child to believe that she or he can do anything! My hope is educate the next scientist, inventor, physician, teacher, astronaut, etc. no mater the culture in which the child lives.
