Marvelous Mathematicians Want to Flash Forward
Funded Apr 25, 2014I truly appreciate your support of my students math learning at LCPCS. While I am now teaching in North Carolina, I know that your generosity helped these children to improve their math fact fluency over the summer. Their 3rd grade teacher reports they are doing well this year, thank you again for contributing to their success. I hope that you will continue to support the teachers at LCPCS as they post projects to help their students achieve their dreams. With your help, they can make sure every child in their classroom has what they need to be successful.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Rizor
2nd Grade Webmasters Want to Zoom to the 21st Century!
Funded Nov 15, 2013Thank you so much for helping me to help my students learn the skills they will need to be successful in the 21st century. Here is a sample of the comments they had when I asked them how having the video camera would help their learning:
"Our camera will help us learn to be a good narrator and learn to make good movies."
"We learned that making a movie is harder than it looks!"
"Our videos help us show our parents what we know."
"This will show us if we want to make movies when we grow up."
"Our movies help us learn about a topic."
Let me describe one of the video projects we've completed thus far and the learning for both teacher and students that resulted:
During the month of January, we studied the history of the Civil Rights movement from slavery times to the present. As a culminating project, we completed a video documentary about the Greensboro Sit In in which students responded to questions such as:
**Why did the students sit in?
**How did they find the courage to do so?
**What did it feel like to be a student sitting in?
**What was the history of the sit-in?
We then uploaded the video to our classroom website to share with families. As we created the video, the students helped to choose the transitions, edit pictures, etc. Then, they watched before we published to see what we do could to improve our next video. As a class, we brainstormed a list of things we could work on. Here are just a few of their insights:
**Some of us need to talk louder and slower so our audience can hear us.
**Our video would be more exciting if we made a background.
**Could we add some music to make it more interesting?
I consider this learning especially important for two reasons. One, the film industry is an area in which our students can find good jobs here in the islands. Two, jobs in many fields require the ability to communicate effectively online, and video projects are an excellent way to learn those skills in a relevant and engaging manner.
The students can hardly wait to do their next video project so they can make it even better!
There is no way I could have provided this learning experience to my class without your support. Thank you again for helping me to prepare my students for their future while still having fun today!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Rizor
