  • Planning Ahead for Success and Engagement!

    Funded Aug 19, 2016

As I write this note, I am filled with gratitude for your generous donations which helped fund my recent Donors Choose project. During the first trimester of this school year, my students have had access to a plethora of supplies necessary in our everyday learning activities. My project was live when the current school year started and I kept parents and students aware of its progress. When it was fully funded, parents and students joined me in celebrating a fully-funded project!

Every day students are excited to use the individual whiteboards and Expo markers- as they make learning fun and interactive. As a teacher, they provide me with immediate feedback and a way to informally assess student learning in a number of subjects including Math and Language Arts. As the year progresses, I look forward to having school supplies readily available for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rios-Travers

  • Unleash the Inner Mathematician!

    Funded Dec 31, 2015

I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for your generous donation to help make my classroom a fun, engaging environment. When you observe students working in my classroom with the new games and manipulatives, they are engaged in mathematical ideas and concepts, all while learning in a fun way. I see students working collaboratively to take proper care of the new materials, clarifying a confusing concept, and listen to each others unique contributions within a group.

During the last few months, I have noticed increased enthusiasm for Math and I can attribute it to the excitement created by these materials. Thanks to you, students are gaining confidence in their abilities to find solutions to mathematical concepts and taking ownership of their learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rios-Travers

  • Petite Artistes!

    Funded Sep 7, 2015

Upon receiving our new art supplies, excitement and wonder from my students filled my classroom! We were always so eager to open up each box together to see what new art supplies we could add to our collection. I want you to know how incredibly grateful we are to have access to art supplies which encourage my students to unleash their creativity.

I currently have many art projects in mind for the future, but, wanted to share our most recent work. During the month of October, we focused on the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. We discussed how influential she was in the early twentieth century and learned about what influenced her artwork. Using many of our new art supplies, we created some pieces influenced by painting close-ups of familiar objects found in nature and paid close attention to color, line, and scale. I believe in the creative process but also in encouraging students to use the appropriate vocabulary during the creative process.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rios-Travers

  • Write from My Heart

    Funded Apr 3, 2015

I received your generous donation with my prior fifth grade class who have now moved on to 6th graders. In the few weeks they have been in 6th grade, I have had the opportunity to read current samples of their writing and can see the growth and development over time.

I can truly say my former and current students were excited and the dictionaries and thesauruses. They are put to use throughout the day, for all subjects. Having easy access to research tools such as these has been a true blessing and a gift and they will continue to benefit students year after year!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rios-Travers

My fifth grade class is eager to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas through writing. The reality is that for some, writing serves as an outlet where they can share experiences they need to get off their chest. Life experiences that a ten year old child should not have to face. My school is located in a low-income, high poverty community in graffiti-ridden surroundings. I know this area well because it is where I grew up. This has helped establish trust and rapport with my students so when I give them that little extra push, they know that I was once in their shoes. Yet, when students are given the opportunity to write, they can be transported from their surroundings, forget about what may be bothering them at home or on the walk home from school. Through the Common Core Standards my students are asked to meet high expectations, especially in writing.
