  • Creating Little Artists ~ One Brush Stroke at a Time

    Funded Oct 25, 2019

When the art supplies arrived to our classroom my students were so excited. They knew the box full of art materials meant exciting projects were in store for them. The boys and girls wanted to use the supplies immediately. It was a challenge to get them to wait for the art lessons. One of our first projects was use the paint brushes to make soldiers. The finished products were hung proudly in the hall to honor the military for Veterans Day.

Since the shipment arrived the students have had many opportunities to use the aprons, paint brushes, and paints so far. They are always excited to use the art materials. Most recently they were able to use the oil pastels to create snowmen. The children were amazed at the rich colors the pastel crayons made when using them.

In the near future my first graders will be using the watercolors and watercolor paper to make beautiful winter paintings. I personally can't wait to see the final products which show off my students' creative side.

Thank you again for your generosity and giving my students this wonderful gift.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ries

  • Hands-On Math Materials for Little Learners

    Funded Aug 14, 2019

My first grade students are absolutely loving the rekenrek math aids, which you so generously provided. They are using them on a daily basis as we move through learning the basics of addition and subtraction. They were especially helpful the past two weeks as we began adding three small numbers. Additionally, the tools provide my students a sense of safety when doing math skill work. For my struggling students the math tools have been extremely important in helping them "see" the numbers and what it means to put together or take apart. It has been exciting for me to observe all the learning taking place with the help of the rekenreks.

When the box arrived I told my class some wonderful people had given our class some new supplies to help with math. They immediately began clapping and giggling. The excitement from my students was wonderful to see. I showed my class the materials and quickly handed them out. After a bit of "play time" they were ready to begin the math lesson of the day. As time has passed the rekenreks are still the tool of choice for my students. Thank you once again for this wonderful donation. You have greatly impacted the learning of many children.”

  • Carpet Time in Second Grade!

    Funded Aug 7, 2016

The world map classroom carpet we received has been such a fabulous addition to our classroom. My students were overjoyed when it arrived. They all came running up to me anxious to see what it would look like. We opened the rug as a class and then spread it on the floor. The "oohs and aahs" coming from the children were priceless. After the the class settled down the kids were immediately drawn to the map in the middle of the carpet. They began asking questions about what they were seeing. The conversations which took place that first day has piqued the interest of many to learn about our world and the continents within it.

Our rug is now the go to place for our class discussions. There is room for all the students and it gives them a sense of where they should sit when we meet. Additionally, many of the children gravitate to it daily for silent reading time. It is not uncommon to see children spread out on the carpet reading their favorite story.

Thank you so much for your kindness and generous donation to our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ries

I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school. The 21 children I teach are a wonderful, wiggly bunch of first graders who come to school everyday with a determination to learn, but many are faced with daily struggles both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they face, my students continue to work hard everyday to meet our school-wide expectations, have positive attitudes, achieve goals and make wise choices. One thing I strive for is to keep things fun and to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. I want our classroom to be a safe, stress free environment in which my students can learn.
