One interactive way to practice sight words, the mix and fix sight word game, will be great for my class. In this game, the letters of the focused sight word(s) are given to each student. The magnetic letters are mixed up. The students then build the word(s) correctly and repeat a few times. Mix and Fix can be engaging and fun! Fun and engaging activities are powerful for my students because the students learn quickly and retain more. Magnetic letters are useful for for a variety of activities including matching upper and lower case letters, locating letters, putting in alphabetical order and matching the sound to the letter or letter to sound. Many magnetic letters are needed to play the mix & fix sight word game when two (sometimes three) reading groups are being run at the same time. Magnetic letters are also used in literacy work stations to practice letter identification and word building. Students need to hear themselves read to help build fluency. Can you imagine 22 kindergarten students reading out loud at the same time? Probably not! That's why the Hear Myself Sound Phones are needed. These phones will eliminate a lot of the noise, yet allow the students to read out loud and keep them engaged. During small reading groups, Hear Myself Sound Phones will be helpful when students reread the instructional books. Choral reading is an outdated and ineffective practice, so allowing my students to utilize the Hear Myself Sound Phones will produce better readers. These phones allow reading at the same time, yet students cannot completely hear what the others are reading (while I check for accuracy).
