  • The Chance To Read SD Award Nominees

    Funded Sep 25, 2013

My students have been feverishly reading these South Dakota Prairie Pasque nominated books. Thank you for giving them the opportunity to participate in the statewide challenge and vote. Because of you my students are able to participate just like all other students in South Dakota. Without your help, that would not have been possible! It is a sheer delight watching kids reading and discussing these book, especially when they discuss their literary merits! There were some of the titles that we were able to purchase multiple copies, enough for some of the fifth graders to form a small book club to encourage each other to read the entire book. Your donation to this project are priceless! Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Radway

  • Well Loved and Worn Out

    Funded Aug 10, 2013

My kids are rolling over laughing reading these well loved books! These books replaced the worn-out, falling apart copies that we used to have in the library; the kids noticed right away! Once again they are able to enjoy the adventures of Elephant and Piggie, Trucktown, and Pete the Cat! It seems that they can never get enough of those adventures!

Thank you for putting huge smiles on my kids' faces! They love the fact that there are people out there that care enough about them to provide them with good books! Thank you for being those caring adults!”

    Mrs. Radway

  • Girls Just Want to Read Fun Books!

    Funded Apr 5, 2013

As soon as I put the books out on display, I could hear the giddy excitement of my fourth and fifth grade girls. At the end of the library period, I had so many excited girls ready to read the books that you donated! They began congregating reading the Dork Diaries books together commenting on the humorous plot and the illustrations incorporated throughout. The books have even sparked the interest of many of the girls to start their own diary of some sort. Your donation has not only made a difference in their reading experience, but it is reaching beyond into extracurricular writing! Thank you so much!”

  • Duplicates Needed!

    Funded Apr 5, 2013

Has Ivan arrived yet? When are the new copies of Ivan going to be here? My fourth graders fell in love with this book from the moment I first did a book talk! As soon as this project was fully funded, I let the kids know that the books were on their way which caused the library to erupt in cheers. As soon as the kids were able to check out the books, they were off the shelf. Small groups of students were congregating together for book club readings. One group even asked if they could stay in from recess to keep reading more of the book! I assure you these books are in avid readers' hands, ready for them to experience these fun new worlds.

And, even though I focused mainly on The One and Only Ivan above, rest assured there were countless kids who were just as eager to check out the American Chillers books, Pickle, and War Horse. Thank you for helping to get exciting books in my students' hands!”

    With gratitude,

  • State Award Winners

    Funded Nov 8, 2012

My students have loved reading these Prairie Pasque award winning books! Many of my 4th and 5th graders are working toward the goal of reading 5 of the books so that they can be a part of the state-wide vote. Without you helping to provide the multiple copies of the books, they might not have been able to participate with the other students across the state. Since the day we got the books, not a single title has sat on the shelf for over a day. As soon as one gets returned, there's another student waiting. It's a great sight to see! Thank you for providing the gift of books to my students so I can help foster a love of reading a variety of genres!”

  • Word Construction Zone: Prefixes and Suffixes

    Funded Sep 1, 2012

Thank you to all of you for helping out with this very important project! My students have loved beginning their exploration of prefixes and suffixes with these games and hands-on learning tools. As they learn more about each prefix and suffix these tools will help my students to practice important skills for reading and writing!

Thank you for helping out in a big way to get my kids excited about an otherwise dull topic. I can see the excitement building already, and I can't wait to see how these materials are going to help my students as they grow throughout the year.”

  • Is This For Real?

    Funded Feb 8, 2012

You really came through for our classroom! There have been so many things learned from these inspiring books that you bought for us to read and use for research! You wouldn't believe how many times I have overheard one student talking to another student about the cool facts they learned from their books. Then, once the other student heard about it, they went and checked out the book that their partner was telling them about! You really have helped to create authentic learning in our classroom! Thank you for REALly inspiring these kids to continue to learn more REAL things!”

    With gratitude,

  • Strong, Sturdy Storage

    Funded Sep 28, 2011

My students thank you, I thank you, and most importantly, our classroom library books give a huge thank you to our wonderful donors!

Prior to us receiving the sturdy book boxes, we were using cardboard magazine holders. Within two weeks of school, we could already see that these magazine holders were not going to work for two reasons: they were already becoming tattered and torn, and there was not enough room for all of the books the kids kept in their book boxes.

Ever since we have had the beautiful, new, blue book boxes students have been able to better take care of their books, and they are able to keep all of their books in one place for independent reading. Without you, independent reading would not run as smoothly, and the students wouldn't get as much time for much needed reading practice!

    Thank you for your kindness!”

    Mrs. Radway

  • Allow History To Come Alive!

    Funded Mar 19, 2011

"It's hard to live under King George III's rule!" "Why would you treat someone like that?" "How can we let King George III know that what he is doing is unfair?" "No taxation without representation!"

Because of your generosity, my students were able to participate in reenactments of various parts of history leading up to the Revolutionary War. The quotations above were some of the comments made by my students as they learned about the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Stamp Act, and the Sugar Act. When my students took on the mindsets of the colonists during this time period, they really were able to understand why people would get so frustrated that they would want to fight for liberty. The great thing about all of this is that we still have another 5 weeks of class where we get to dive even deeper into more simulations of the American Revolution!

Also, your donations allowed us to have some review games in order to keep information about the Native Americans and the early explorers fresh in our memories. The games allowed my students to work collaboratively and focus on those key concepts again.

Thank you for helping make our dreams come true in our classroom! History truly came alive...and in full force! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Radway

  • You LIGHT Up Our Lives!

    Funded Mar 1, 2011

You really did light up our world as we learned about the physical properties of light and how they effect us! To say that the kids were excited about "perfect strangers" donating so they can succeed would be a drastic understatement. They were very grateful for your kindness in helping boost our science curriculum to hands-on excitement!

Because of your donation my students were able to conduct experiments with light. Using the refraction and reflection light experiment kits, my students were able to see how light changes as it passes through different mediums and how it bounces off of reflective surfaces. Using the lenses they were able to experience first hand how light converges and diverges. And, to top it off, the students loved learning even more on a light topic by looking through the experiment books to set up and conduct their own "special interest experiments" to share with the class.

Thank you for being the light these students needed in order to really learn about the properties of light!”

I am the school librarian at a school where nearly 90% of my students live below the poverty line. The more we can get books in these kids' hands that they want to read, the more likely they will succeed in the future. Help me help these students love reading by providing these highly engaging books that my kids are asking for that our library budget just won't cover!
