When their little brains and hearts are so full of life and energy, of course their young bodies are equally alive and active! Even though they are engaged learners, sometimes their need to move overpowers their desire to stay on-task and focus. Therefore, my project is to provide them with a room that is as diverse in seating options as they are varied in personalities, learning abilities and styles.
Choice is important when creating independent learners; flexible-seating is a key component in the setting of this classroom environment. It allows students to understand which study-habits work best for them and begin to use this knowledge to create optimum learning opportunities for themselves.
The need for flexible seating is especially strong in our sensory-overloaded world that allows less time for physical activity through decreased recess and PE allotments. Physical activity is linked to better health, improved behavior, and higher academic performance. The wobble stools will allow students to use excess energy, improving focus and metabolism. The balance balls will increase core-strength and overall posture, creating better oxygen-flow to the brain. The inflatable discs transform traditional chairs in to more flexible seating that enhances motivation and engagement. The lap boards allow students to sit or lay on the floor while they work on writing. Additionally, I will raise some desks for students to stand and work, and lower others to allow them to kneel or sit cross-legged.
Being good stewards of the tools also allows my class to practice life-skills such as responsibility, safety, and respect. With so many advantages, I hope to give the gift of flexible seating to all my learners this fall. I appreciate your time and consideration in partnering with me on this project!
