I Teach Programming - Now!
Funded Jun 8, 2017I have really enjoyed learning more about the logic behind coding and the different ways to teach my students how to start coding in the classroom. This course definitely expanded my ability to teach computer science to the middle-grade students I teach. The lessons that are now available to me will be invaluable as we move forward through the school year. I have 70 students that will benefit each and every year, about half of them girls, and many second language learners. A highlight for me during this course, which I will admit challenged me to work outside of my comfort zone, was the focus on project based learning. We will be using a blended learning model in my classroom this year, which will include project based learning. This course opened my eyes to the resources available in project based learning. I appreciated reviewing the difference between true project based learning and simply doing projects after the learning occurred. Thank you sincerely for this incredible opportunity to participate. I highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn more about computer science/coding and project based learning.”

Funded Aug 25, 2016Thank you so much for the generous donation to purchase these fabulous heart rate monitors for my students. They had enjoyed using them so much here at school that we took them with us to our outdoor school, also know as '6th grade camp'.
At first, students were very excited to wear these and find their heart rate without having to count. Often times in the past, there were always a few students who could not feel their pulse, no matter how hard they tried. I had to explain that having the highest heart rate was not really the best! Even after the novelty wore off a bit, students still loved checking their own heart rate and comparing it to their numbers earlier in the year. This was a fabulous purchase.
Thank you so much for making it happen for my students. These monitors are in excellent condition and will continue to be used next year, impacting even more students.”

Funded Dec 31, 2015Thank you so very much for your support of my students. We are having a great time reading Black Ships Before Troy, an adaptation of the Iliad. It has been a lot of fun diving deeply to analyze characters such as Aphrodite, Achilles, Odysseus, Paris and Helen. Students can barely believe that these stories were written nearly three thousand years ago. They listen intently as we take turns reading the battle scenes and engage in excellent academic arguments over the interventions of the gods and goddesses - do they do so for their own good or the good of the people? We have compared the literature references to those in our history text book, making this unit on Greece extremely memorable. I look forward to using this book year after year, and it is you who have made this possible. Thanks a million!”

Supplies for Success
Funded Nov 12, 2015We love using these supplies! Even with all of the technology we have access to these days, nothing feels quite like using whiteboards. My students love using these whiteboards to practice converting fractions to decimals and percents and back again. We have used these for other math practice as well, and this week we will be ready to use the coordinate grid side to graph two variable equations. Clickable whiteboard markers? They were a hit! Your generosity also provided us the roll out white board which fully extended my ability to show / do work with my students. We truly appreciate you!”

Sporting Teamwork
Funded Nov 30, 2015Thank you so very much. Because of your support, I have been able to increase my students' opportunities to participate in team sports, and we LOVE IT! Physical education is not just a chance to play. While we have had fun, my students also improved or learned new physical skills such as throwing, catching, and hitting. They have learned to strategize, and to collaborate on the field. Through your generosity and my guidance, my students have learned more about what it means to work hard as a part of a team. We appreciate everything you have given us. Please know that your impact is even farther reaching, as these materials will last for many years to come.”

Rocks Rock!
Funded Jul 20, 2015Thank you so very much for your generous donation to our classroom project. Earth Science is the focus of our 6th grade standards. Our curriculum does not come with supplies for projects like this one where my students were able to work with rocks and fossils in the classroom. It is only because of your generosity that we have hands-on experiences as opposed to simply reading about the earth. While science literacy is an important component for all students, the ability to hold these rocks and fossils really made the science come alive for my students. We cannot thank you enough for your support. I will use these materials for years to come so that many students can benefit. Sincerely, thank you again!”

Fluency Is Fun! Math Games That Make A Difference
Funded May 4, 2015Thank you so very much for your generous donation to our project. Students have used these fun games for improving their math fluency. Whether math was their favorite subject or not, these fun games really motivated my students to learn more through play. We know that students who are having fun learn more readily and remember what they learned. Students look forward to playing these games each week. Your support has made all the difference! Thank you again. You are very much appreciated!”

Books, Books, Books!
Funded Nov 4, 2014Thank you so much! We are having a lot of fun in our literature circles. My students are talking about books, and it is not only educational, but incredible fun for me to see them have a good time in class.
Your support has allowed my class to have a choice of books. We really could not have done this without you. Every week, the literature circles meet to discuss the section of the book their group decided to read. They have choice and ownership - a powerful combination! Students have their tasks ready to share, whether it is a character analysis, the job of word wizard, or literary luminary, who reads several passages that stood out to them as important or very cool that week.
It is wonderful to know that when we finish this round, we have plenty of other book sets on multiple levels to choose from for another round. Thank you again for your incredible generosity. We will use these books for many years to come.”

Bringing Back Books II
Funded Jun 19, 2014Thank you, sincerely, for your generous support of my students and our classroom. Your help will go a long way toward assuring my students, now and in years to come, have the opportunity to read high quality literature throughout the school year.
My students looked at the huge box of books I was carrying from the office when I picked them up from the lunch room. Immediately, they wanted to know what was in that box! Several boys asked if they could carry it for me (they are always so helpful!). When we got to the classroom, I opened up the box for the students and held up each set of books. The kids 'oohed' and 'aahed' and got really excited!
The added books for our literature circles really created a lot of buzz. The groups have been going very well, and they had been wondering what we would do when we ran out of titles. Honestly, I had been wondering the same thing. Thankfully, that did not happen. With your support, we were easily able to continue reading in our small groups. All of my students now agree that literature circles help them understand the book that they are assigned more because they have a chance to talk about the characters and the plot with someone that same day or the next.
We truly appreciate your incredible gift to us.”

Bringing Back Books
Funded Apr 14, 2014Thank you, sincerely, for your generous support of my students and our classroom. Your help will go a long way toward assuring my students, now and in years to come, have the opportunity to read high quality literature throughout the school year.
As students looked through the selection of novels, their excitement grew. Several students commented that they wished we had had these books earlier in the school year, when they first started the sixth grade. They absolutely loved the idea of having enough books to read the same one as their peers.
Getting started was easy with all of the excitement! When asked, most students commented that the literature circles helped them understand the book that they were assigned more because they had a chance to talk about the characters and the plot with someone that same day or the next. I would hear them argue about characters at recess and even once before school. I had to agree with their appraisal of this project - comprehension improved dramatically over sending students home with individually leveled texts and having them read, and assess, in isolation. Every student passed their Accelerated Reader test for the book that they read, but what they gained from the experience is so much greater than that. Thank you!
We truly appreciate your incredible gift to us.”
