Great writers and strong readers require an environment conducive to creativity and focus. Our micro-economy in our classroom allows students to make decisions on what is best for their learning, reading, and writing style in order to be successful. Among their choices of what they can spend their classroom money on is an opportunity to choose flexible seating that best benefits them. Many students, especially when they have time to independently read and analyze texts or collaborate in discussions, prefer to sit somewhere that is not an old fashioned chair-attached-to-a-desk space. Flexible seating allows for student choice and structured movement. The exercise balls allow them to get out the wiggles, especially during the winter months where they days are stifled by cold weather. The laptop desks allow them to sit on the floor and work in groups, or can be used on top of a table to let them stand in the classroom. These are especially great for socratic seminars, where they can stand and have dialogues/debates, but still take notes on their laptops or in their notebooks to they can respond using text-based evidence. This flexible seating means the world for our classroom. It will help students grow in their autonomy as they become more aware of how they learn and what they need to be successful. It allows us to more freely collaborate without the restriction of physical desks. The cash box will serve as an organizational system for the classroom "bank" - where the money is stored until they are paid. Students bankers can keep it locked until someone wants to purchase/rent spaces and/or supplies. Your contribution allows for a new generation of readers and writers to learn and grow. Help us be set up for success for the new school year!
