I was first exposed to a classroom sound system at my former school, which housed a hearing impaired program. Because of this program, I was privileged to have a handful of hearing impaired students mainstream into my classroom and with these students, typically came a sound system. It wasn't long before I noticed that, not only did the sound system benefit my hearing impaired students, but all of the my other students as well.
Because of this experience, I am a firm believer that a classroom sound system improves student achievement, focus, engagement and participation, as well as helps a teacher's energy level.
Many studies support this belief as well. Did you know the average student misses 25% of what a teacher says? This is due to several factors including background noise, seating arrangements, and the fact that young children lack the vocabulary and fully-developed auditory pathways in the brain. Kids can hear the teacher, just not as clearly as adults can. Therefore, over the course of the day, students like mine have to spend more time and energy just trying to stay focused and pay attention. Studies have shown, that with a quality sound system like Front Row's Juno, students' attentiveness, listening, on-task behavior, and comprehension improves. A positive by-product of this is that it also allows a teacher to be more effective, efficient, productive, and reduces voice strain.
Specifically, there was a five month study conducted of 85 research and 81 control first graders in a Florida school district. The results showed that the students with the sound systems achieved significant literacy gains and jumped seven or more reading levels!
Ultimately, I want my students to have the best opportunity to reach their full potential and I strongly feel a classroom sound system will help to support this.
