My 2nd graders typically come from a socio-economically disadvantaged background. The school I teach at is a Title 1 school in California which is facing tremendous budget cuts. 82% of our students are enrolled in the free lunch program and approximately 60% are English Learners. This means that for many students, their parents are unable to help them with their reading. They can not give them the support when needed. Therefore the responsibility of giving my students access to great literature often falls solely on the teacher and school.
