  • Motivational Literature

    Funded Jul 3, 2018

Reading is essential to everyday life. Your generous donation will allow my students to have access to novels that will motivate them to read independently. It will also provide novels that are of high interest to them. These novels will build upon a classroom library that already exists. It will enhance critical literacy skills that are fundamental to the future success of my students. As students read novels of their choosing they will be involved in projects that demonstrate their understanding of literary elements. The novels chosen are also of different reading levels so that every student has an opportunity to choose novels at their level.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. O'Shea

  • Teen Hygiene

    Funded Jul 15, 2018

Thank you for your generous donation. I presented my students with a goodie bags with toothpaste, a toothbrush and deodorant. In my previous experience my students have come to school with out clean hygiene because of the lack of tools and knowledge to take care of there well being.

As a result those are the students who lack self esteem or maybe are not aware of there poor hygiene because of there socio economic situation. This past week I presented lessons to my students about the importance of brushing there teeth, showering and using deodorant. My female students will know that they can always have a supply of sanitary pads. They will also have a lesson on how to clean their clothes.”

  • Enquiring Minds Want to Know

    Funded Aug 2, 2018

Thank you for your generous donation to my students. Because there are so many social, political and economic issues occurring in our society today, it is vital that students have resources that are written at a level they will understand. Junior Scholastic will help my students become engaged in current events. It is important that they have a comprehensive understanding so that they themselves can form independent opinions on issues that affect them the most. As students become more engaged in there learning they will inquire more about what is going on in the world that will have a positive or negative effect on them.

They will also gain an understanding that they have a voice and can change the world around them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. O'Shea

  • Thought -Provoking Library

    Funded Jan 3, 2018

Thank you for your generous donation. The novels added a variety of genres to my classroom library. They also added novels that are of high interest for my students. As the novels arrived I introduced the books to students so that they knew that the novels were new. Many of them were checked out that day. Students are creating advertisements for the novels. They also have to present a two minute commercial about a book they have been reading from my library. They will be submitting projects to me by February 2nd. They will not only create a commercial but they will also describe the character traits of the main characters, the theme, conflicts, setting, the mood and tone. Thank you again for you generosity.”

  • Lexington and Concord through Historical Fiction

    Funded Dec 29, 2017

Thank you for your generous donation. My students enjoyed the novel and were very engaged in their learning. As they read they created charts to analyze the characters and events as they unfolded. They also read and analyzed Longfellow's poem,The Midnight Ride, and compared the poem to real events of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. After reading the novel they have become more aware of the risks that people took to gain our independence. They enjoyed the novel because they read about ordinary Americans that did not become famous but fought for our independence and freedoms. Thank you for giving my students this learning experience.”

  • The Weather Outside Is Frightful

    Funded Dec 30, 2017

Thank you for your generosity. My students were delighted to receive warm hats and gloves. With the help of my colleagues we were able to identify students and their siblings who were in need of warmer clothing. We distributed them to those that we had already identified and as the last couple of weeks have past more students have come forward asking if they to could have a hat or gloves.

This was tremendously generous of you. Many of my students walk to and from school and we have had zero degree weather as well as lots of snow. Thank you for caring.”

    With gratitude,

  • Bringing a Healthy Environment to a Classroom

    Funded Aug 24, 2017

My neediest students started this school year and are very grateful for your generous donation to our class. They eat breakfast and lunch in our room and clean up after they have finished eating. Because of your generosity, they start their day with a clean desk. The supply of cleanex, cleaning products, sanitary products, and air freshener has created a learning environment that is like home. As a result, they are in a positive environment for learning that they may not have at home. To ask them to bring to school these products would have been an added expense for their families.”

  • The American Revolution through Historical Fiction

    Funded Aug 24, 2017

Thank you for your generous gift. My students enjoyed reading " My Brother Sam is Dead." I used the novel to teach them about historical fiction. As they read the novel they also plotted out the story. They were taught mini-lessons on the following literary elements: conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and theme. They enjoyed the novel so much that they wanted to know if there was a movie made based on the novel. They were engaged in discussions about the main character and how he changed and was forced to grow because of his life experiences. They were learning about the American Revolutionary War and also used knowledge from Social Studies and made connections to what the novel was about.”

  • Scan Texts to Google Classroom and Save a Tree

    Funded Nov 30, 2016

Thank you for your generous donation. Because of budget cuts we have had to cut the amount of text that we would normally have copied on a copy machine. The Epson scanner devices that you donated has saved me valuable time that I can now use for planning. I have shared one of the scanners with my special ed teaching partner so that she can scan modified text for our special education students that we both teach. Students have benefited from your donation. Each student has access to a chrome book and can complete assignments even when they are absent. It has been a great resource.”

  • News Kids Can Use

    Funded Aug 9, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Thank you for your generous gift to my students. So far my students have received 2 issues of Scholastic News magazine. Your generosity has made my students become engaged in their learning. It has given them an opportunity to express their opinions and learn how to properly debate an issue through a technique called accountable talk. As the election year progresses the magazine will help them understand complex issues that our country faces that will effect them now and in the future. It will help them have a better understanding of our election process, political parties and other current event.

Furthermore, Scholastic News has already contributed to their development as effective readers , and improved their vocabulary, word recognition skills, and comprehension.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. O'Shea

My students are mostly Hispanic and African American. Because of the economy, many of my students parents are struggling to provide for their children. My students live in a community where parents do their best to provide for their children but because of the lack of economic opportunities in their community many of my students begin the school year without needed supplies.
