  • Engineering a STEM Solution!

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

It seems appropriate that I write this letter on Thanksgiving. As I sit here with my morning coffee, I am reflecting on the many blessings that have been bestowed on me this year. One that stands out is the overwhelming generosity of the people who contributed to my Donors Choose Project for the students at Carteret Middle School. Through your selfless act of kindness, you have impacted the educational life of these students in unimaginable ways, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Our year began with my students and I excitedly unpacking the boxes that arrived in our classroom containing our new supplies. It was like Christmas in September! My co-teacher and I had written the new Engineering and Design curriculum over the summer and were hoping that some donations would arrive in time for our first challenge. Imagine our surprise when we received ALL MATERIALS before our first class! We could now start our planned design challenges to introduce our seventh graders to

Our first challenge was to design a stand for a cell phone camera to allow you to take a stop motion video. The students used the K'NEX sets to make their designs come alive. One outstanding result was a stand that could be fully adjusted in all four cardinal directions, and rolled on a track! Our second challenge was to design a safety harness to protect a raw egg as it traveled down a ramp in one of our FRICTION CARS from Frey Scientific. There were some creative and colorful results - and many cracked eggs! Our winner designed a cocoon for their egg using cellophane tape and cotton balls attached to the base of their car.

Next up was our trebuchet prototypes. Using found objects around the classroom (pencils, rubber bands, string, glue sticks) students designed a catapult to toss a marshmallow. All projects were stored on our Keter Heavy Duty Utility Shelf while we were working on them. This was in preparation for the main activity - building a full size catapult for pumpkins! Using our JORESTECH Eyewear Protective Safety Glasses, the students cut their own wood, drilled their designs together and launched their pumpkins just before November break!

Our upcoming design challenges include pasta bridge efficiency testing, self propelled vehicles, and a recycled runway project. Through the use of the donations so generously provided, my students have greatly improved their ability to design and build prototypes, and have stretched their creative thinking, so I can't WAIT to see what they dream up for these challenges. THANK you for helping to encourage their dreams!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. O'Hare Barrows

Hands on STEM activities have a positive influence on student learning. Making science fun and interesting helps my student do much more than just learn. It inspires them to stretch their boundaries and get in touch with their innate creativity. These STEM tools will foster their passion for learning and keep fueling their creativity! The Erector Sets and K’NEX Model kits will allow my students to design and build prototypes of their engineering projects. They can then use these prototypes to create their final projects. These materials will allow students to experience, first hand, the engineering and design process. The shelving units will provide storage for these projects during the design and redesign phase. I have seen students get absorbed in the creative process and become completely immersed in solving the problems that inevitably arise during testing and re-testing their ideas. The more tools I can provide to support this creativity, the better!
