I currently teach 3rd grade in a title 1 Chicago Public School. For anyone that is familiar, or not, with teaching 3rd grade, you should know that 3rd grade is a benchmark year. This means that students need to not only have a passing cumulative grade in reading and math, but they must also pass a standardize test at the end of the year. With that said, it's crucial for my 3rd graders to be provided with the best environment to promote concentration and motivation, enhance critical thinking skills, and opportunities to engage with others in ways they feel most comfortable and successful. My plan to achieving this goal is to provide my student's with flexible seating.
What is flexible seating? It's an opportunity for student's to select a seating option that strays away from the tradition desk and chair. In addition, studies have shown benefits from flexible seating include: "burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture". Furthermore, "physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior".
With your support, students will be provided with stability cushions, wobbly stools, Senseez floor cushions, and a kidney table. Some of the ways these items will be utilized throughout the day is during Daily 5 and Daily Math rotations, as well as during small group work with the teacher. Your donation will directly impact student learning and development in a unique way.
