  • Move To Learn

    Funded Feb 7, 2017

A big thank you for donating to the Wobble chair project. The children are enjoying the chairs and are asking for more. The chairs allow movement while listening to directions, improvement with posture while sitting and promote more time with their writing and learning. Children need movement to learn and to grow. Wobble chairs help support the learning process. The children need to have access to appropriate types of seating to remain engaged in the learning process.

Thank you again for your generous donations.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy OT

  • Limber Fingers

    Funded May 29, 2015

Thank you for your generous donations to my project Limber Fingers 1552073). We have received our equipment and are using each item to help improve our handwriting and our strength. The equipment provides the extra help that we need to be good creative writers. Writing takes a long time and stamina. We are working on strengthening our fingers and our arms. We are working on having good posture and support, so that our minds can think of great ideas to write about. Again, we thank you for helping us become amazing writers.”

  • Bring An Author to School!

    Funded Apr 19, 2013

    Hello to all,

We had the pleasure to bring our second author to our school, Yumi Heo. Yumi is an author and illustrator of children's books. Yumi provided her back ground as a child growing up in South Korea. She provide samples of South Korean boy and girl clothing. Yumi read one of her books "Lady Hahn And Her Seven Friends". This is a book about team work and respecting each others contributions. Yumi provided slides of her childhood and pictures of her illustrations . Yumi ended with a demonstration of origami. The students made a South Korean shirt. The students were engaged and participated throughout the assembly.

Having authors come to school provides a student with the opportunity to experience an author. The student is able to ask questions on how to write a book, the steps it takes and the rewriting and editing process. Students become more engaged in their own reading and writing.

The teachers, staff and students want to thank Donor's Choose and our donors for providing this opportunity to our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy OT

  • Hurricane Sandy Recovery: Relax...Refocus...Be Ready...

    Funded Dec 17, 2012

I just want to thank you all again for your generous donations to my Donors Choose Project " Relax...Refocus...Be Ready". The supplies are just beginning to arrive. I will be placing the supplies in the classroom to help the students who have trouble sitting during a lesson, during reading time and during the morning routine. This simple product can make a big difference for a child who needs extra support. This product provides an additional tool for the teacher to use.

Students today are faced with many demands in the classroom. Learning can be hard for some children. A lack of focus, excessive movement and fidgety behaviors can interfere with the learning process. Teachers do not always have access to specialized items that could benefit a student and a classroom. Thanks to Donors Choose and great people like you that can be brought together to make a small difference one teacher at a time.

Again, than you for your donation to my project. Your donation will make a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy OT

  • Writing Tools For a Busy School

    Funded Jun 28, 2012

I just want to thank all of the donors that helped to make Writing Tools for a Busy School a success. This project was funded in June and we just received the ordered supplies. These supplies will be used in the classrooms during writing workshop. students will now be able to spend more time with their writing activities instead of locating writing supplies or broken pencils. The special pencils and pencil grips will help special education students to hold the pencil correctly. Again, thank you all so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy OT

  • Fidget Fridays

    Funded Mar 21, 2012

I would like to thank all the donors who found the compassion to donate to my project Fidget Friday's. This project was created last summer. All that was needed was the fidgets. The children are learning about famous quotes on Motivational Monday, learning to use quiet voices on Tip Toe Tuesday, exploring science and math on Wonderous Wednesday and using kind and caring words on Thoughful Thursday. Fidget Friday is the bonus day. The children are enjoying the fidgets. They understand the reasons for fidgets ( tired hands from a lot of handwriting). Teachers and students have been provided with a demonstration on the use of the fidgets. Students in the hall ask about the fidgets and tell me how great they are. The children are aware that Donors Choose and donors like you made this possible. Again, I would like to thank you as well as all the students and teachers at this school. You are the best!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Murphy OT

I am the school Occupational Therapist in a public school working with students and teachers in kindergarten through 5th grade. I work with students in special education and recently the entire classroom through the teacher using RtI (Response to Intervention.) All our students work very hard and try their very best. I would like to create a classroom tool to be used by teachers to help address fidgeting and fatigue especially of the hands and fingers. The tool is a bin of fidgets that allow the children to squish, squeeze and pull using their hands. This is fun and exciting for the child and at the same time increases strength in their hands to help with the fine motor activities required in a classroom setting. This also allows for appropriate hand movement or fidgeting for the restless child.
