Online Access for All More Often!
Funded Nov 20, 2015Our iPad minis are up and running! Thank you, Donors, for helping address the issue of limited technology in our classroom. As mentioned in my request letter, it was difficult for our students to get through their assigned reading and math programs on a regular basis without the necessary number of devices. Now that we have the additional devices, students can complete both programs on time and stay on track!
The program that we use for reading improvement in our English Learner population is called Imagine Learning. It allows students to develop their literacy skills in English and Spanish (in our Dual Language program) through interactive games, videos and activities. The other program we can use on the iPad minis is ST (spatial-temporal) Math. This program develops our students in area of logic, critical thinking, number sense and spatial awareness through animations that improve mathematical concepts.
Thank you again for investing in the educational success of our students. They greatly appreciate your generosity!”

Caution: Students at Work Towards 21st Century Skills
Funded Oct 24, 2014After some delay due to technical difficulties, our class is up and running with the use of our new iPads. The students were so excited to have the new technology at their fingertips so they could finally use our new reading program without having to share or wait for the availability of a computer. Students are eager to be able to use the technology daily during our class time, as well as their free time during recess or lunch to catch up on their reading assignments.
As mentioned in my original request, the iPads are allowing us the opportunity for students to progress at their own pace in their reading comprehension. While students use the reading program on the iPads, I am able to work with other students individually or in a small group on reading comprehension skills that the program suggested they needed to practice. Knowing that they will be held accountable for their progress keeps students motivated to stay on task.
Having used the iPads now for about three weeks, they are now a regular part of our learning environment and has encouraged many of our students and parents to use the educational technology at home on their own devices. That was one of the goals! If students are exposed to educational technology, they will more readily access it on their own (as opposed to just games).
We cannot thank you enough for all your generous support in helping launch this project in our classroom. It means a lot to have people like yourselves express confidence in what teachers are trying to do to help students become more proficient learners.”

Mrs. MOSBY
Common Core Ready
Funded Oct 25, 2013Thank you all very much for your support in purchasing an iPad for my classroom. The students are excited to be able to use a technology at school that has become so commonplace for them at home. Since the purchase of the iPad, I have been able to download helpful and exciting resources that have enhanced my instruction such as Brainpop, One-Minute Reader, Running Record Calculator, Wordly Wise 3000, Grammar 4 Writers, etc. Many of the apps were FREE and others were of a minimal cost.
With these apps, students have been able to read grade level appropriate texts on their own and increase their fluency using the timed readings. Students can now view videos on Brainpop about historical events, such as the California Gold Rush, and take quizzes to see what they understand and remember. My ELL students can use the grammar app to practice English grammar rules as they attempt to incorporate these skills into their writing. Students can work on these apps in pairs or as a whole group when I project it onto our white board.
The functionality of the iPad as a video camera has also enhanced our classroom activities since it is so easy to readily view and upload video clips to our class web page. We have been able to record our "Gold Rush Talk Shows", as well as other activities such as a class dance and poetry recitations.
The beauty of using the iPad in school is that those who have tablets at home are now educating their parents about the various educational apps, as well as bringing in their own tablets to share what they have discovered. For example, one student incorporated her tablet into the Talk Show by showing a video clip about Biddy Mason's life and then asking "Biddy" to comment on it. So fun!!”

Bring Music Back to Our School!
Funded May 22, 2010Thank you all so much for your generosity. Your donations have allowed our students to have the experience of learning music in a very tangible way. The recorders we have received will be incorporated into a music program that would have been discontinued otherwise. I can't tell you how excited we are to begin preparing for a recital that will showcase our efforts as fledgling musicians.
I hope you can appreciate the very real impact you have made on our students in this current educational climate.
