This learning kit will be utilized by twelve Pre-Kindergarten and Early Childhood classes next year. The teachers within our program would like to work together to provide twelve different learning kits that we share throughout the year. In this way, 240 students can benefit from donations to this project. So many of the students we serve in our program have never had exposure to classic stories such as Little Red Riding Hood. It is important that we use our time with these young learners to engage them in these pieces of our shared culture. We know what an impact early exposure to all types of literature has on literacy skills throughout students' lives. Laying this foundation is a critical component in our work with these youngest students in our community. Reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood will only be the beginning of our adventure with this learning kit. The students will also be able to act out the story with their peers using the costume pieces included in these resources. Further, the Lakeshore STEM kit will support learning in the following areas: problem solving, design process, counting, weight, volume, and cause and effect. The Smartgames activity will be utilized to foster collaboration as the students work together to meet the challenges presented. All of these activities together will provide the students with deep learning across multiple subjects. All items chosen will also meet universal design for learning (UDL) standards in regard to providing multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement. In this way, we can ensure that ALL LEARNERS, are challenged and provided with the means to express their knowledge.
