Approximately 40% of our 1,510 students fall within the poverty index, yet we have a 96% attendance rate and a low drop-out rate of 2%. Our students need to learn the information and technology skills necessary to thrive in the 21st century, yet the dated technology available to students presents challenges for teachers. Teachers strive to provide students with educational experiences infused with technology, yet students must use computers with out-of-date operating systems that do not work with modern-day Chrome apps. Your donation to the Eagles Soar with Technology project will purchase 6 Chromebase computers to finish updating a computer lab for student use. This technology will allow students to learn essential information and technology skills that will help them now and in the future. Utilizing the added Chromebases, students will complete collaborative research projects through Google apps that sharpen information literacy skills. All content area teachers will design research projects that incorporate Google apps as the final product. Google apps such as Docs, Slides, Sites, and Sheets can be shared with other students, allowing students to experience information discovery with their peers in real-time. Students will also use Google apps to improve speaking and listening skills. World Language and the ESOL teachers will pair students in their classes to share the rough draft of major projects with each other via Google Drive. Students will then provide feedback in their native language via Google Docs or Google Hangouts. Chromebases will also allow students will connect classroom lessons to life and career goals. Guidance counselors will collaborate with teachers to help students make real world connections with their classroom lessons. Examples include: resume and admission essay writing in English; financial planning in Math and Economics; and virtual job shadowing in Biology.
