The prevailing minority of the Yakima Valley are Hispanic or Latino, our school demographics are an accurate representation with 77% of the student body identifying as Hispanic or Latino. My 3rd grade students are so diverse in their background, while some of my students have attended the same school since kindergarten, others are new to the school, and some are even new to the state. My students are also very diverse academically and socially. Some students entered 3rd grade as English Language Learners, while others have an IEP in place. All of the students in our school district will receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. Although this is a great benefit for our students the reality is that this is being offered to our students because of the high level of poverty within the district.
