Music for the Senses!
Funded Feb 14, 2019For my project "music for the senses" I had my students with special needs in mind. I have a self contained class of students with varying degrees of cognitive and behavioral needs. These instruments for this project were chosen to help provide soothing sounds as well as a musical experience for some of the students who have physical limitations. The tongue drums, kalimbas, chime, and cymbals have provided an opportunity of all of my students to participate in a musical experience in my classroom.
They were all very excited about their new instruments and enjoy making music on them every day!”

Funded Feb 14, 2019Our new music stands arrived and I assembled them right away! My students were so excited when our custodian brought in all the boxes, they knew right away what they were! Having a set of beautiful, new music stands has made our room look nicer, and has made it much easier for the students to play. I have noticed that they have been taking more pride in our band room space and are working very hard to keep the stands looking perfect and the room looking good. It has been a tremendous morale boost to have some new equipment that is not all full of graffiti or falling apart and tipping over while we are trying to play.
I and my students are so appreciative of your contribution to our room and our band program. We cannot thank you enough!!”

Funded Sep 8, 2018Thank you so much for your generous contributions to my project! In the 6 or so weeks since I have implemented the use of "The Simple Rhythmatician" with my beginner band class, I have seen a drastic increase in my students' ability to read and identify rhythms correctly! We have identified a mathematical rule for the basic division of rhythms and we have been able to as a class transfer knowledge gained from the book series to the music we are preparing for our concert. This book series has become a staple of our rehearsal time (it's great for warm ups!) and will be something we use for the rest of the year as we move forward in our understanding of rhythm!
Reading in the music classroom shares many elements with reading in other disciplines, but we take literacy a step further in that we are learning to decode and decipher a new language! Not only do my students need to be able to identify the music elements they see on the page, but they also have to transfer what they are reading to playing on their instrument.
We have come a long way since the beginning of the year and I am very proud of the progress we have made! I cannot wait to see how much more my students will grow in their musical abilities by the end of the year!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Merkel
