Funded Aug 6, 2017First and foremost, I would like to begin by extending a huge thank you from myself, my students, our school, and families for gifting us with the materials needed for our students to start their very own school newspaper. The first issue was published last month by the students, and the looks on their faces as it printed was priceless. They were so excited to deliver and share the articles they had worked so hard on and the excitement spread throughout our whole school. We were all impressed with the product and the students in other classes couldn't wait to join the Newspaper Club. As we prepare for the delivery of our next issue, we again, are thankful for the generosity that made it possible.
Something that may seem simple as a printer and cameras has ignited a fire in our students because it is accessible by them and grants them control over creating something. A lot of technology in schools isn't readily available to the students because it may need repair, there is not enough, or it is more for adult use. There is also something enticing about the idea that they get to type and format their writing and then print as opposed to handwriting and copying their work as they're used to. A simple gift has made a great impact.
The students are coming up with amazing ideas such as a comic strip by a student who loves to draw and gets frustrated because our school does not offer art at this time; or the advice column where students have asked very thoughtful questions about bullying and making friends. The students are also getting to practice their opinion writing as well as conducting surveys and interviews. Students have begged to read "The Ranger Report, Jr." for homework and during centers because they have enjoyed it so much. And the contributors are excited to get extra copies to share with families. We are truly appreciative of the support from all our donors, thank you!”
