All of my students want to gain Spanish proficiency and improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. Even though all of my students speak Spanish at home, many of my students have never read a Spanish novel. My students do not want to lose their language, and have chosen to take Spanish as an elective. Currently, we do not have a class set of any novels, and we have very few Spanish books for independent reading. Students are very eager to practice their Spanish in an academic setting, but we are lacking the books and resources to get a class library started. By creating a Free Voluntary Reading library (FVR) students will be able to explore books independently, and choose books to read based on their interests, as well as their grade/reading level. These books will allow students to discover how enjoyable reading can be no matter what language they read in. By reading in their native language, students will not only improve their Spanish, but these reading skills will also transfer into their other classes. Furthermore, students will improve and broaden their vocabulary, thus improving their writing and speaking in Spanish. The Spanish Scholastic magazines will bring in rich culture, history, and current events happening around the world, all in the target language. We plan to use these together and open up important dialogue around the articles. Gaining access to high interest reading materials is very important to keep my students motivated to read and speak Spanish fluently.
