Last year I started to slowly introduce flexible seating option to my students. I immediately saw a huge improvement to their attitudes and learning ability. By offering flexible seating, it allows students to get up and move around. This is a huge change from the traditional desk/chair set up because the students have the ability to move their bodies continually throughout the day. It allows for students to personalize how they learn best. At the end of the year, my students and I sat down and came up with a list of 'wish items' that these students felt next years group would need to be successful in their schooling. Flexible seating is so important for the overall health and wellness of the students because they are not just sitting at a desk all day. The seating allows them to get up, move, stretch out and stand as much as their small bodies need. Standing desks and chair bands are proven to help students who have ADD and ADHD because it allows them to be active while still being in place and successfully learning. This is the same with stools, cushions, and lap trays. These all lead to healthy changes for the students and is a much healthier position than traditional chairs all the time. The other huge item on their list was playground balls/equipment for our playground. There are not any spare balls kept outside, and the students were always needing to bring them from home. The students were very excited over the idea of having the options of different sports balls, frisbees, and jump ropes to help them get the exercise towards the 60 minutes of play a day they need.
