My students all have special needs, ranging from Learning Disabled to Emotionally Disturbed to Autistic. They live in an urban, low-income neighborhood, and many are not exposed to lifestyles outside of their surrounding area. Literacy is the main academic focus as so many students, those with special needs as well as those in the regular classroom, struggle with reading well into the third and fourth grades. However, they are all eager to learn, and enjoy the various resources/programs our school has to offer. Unfortunately, although our school has many books and programs, it lacks differentiated learning materials that support students with special needs. As their special education teacher, I struggle with providing them with the hands-on learning that so many of them require.
