  • Neat and Clean

    Funded Jan 4, 2024

We are profoundly grateful for your generous donation to our classroom! The students realized how much we take simple things for granted: the proper tools to keep the classroom clean. When the donations came in, they were just as excited as I was!! They begged me to let them open the packaging, then immediately put them to good use.

How much we had to endure before the donations came in! Unfortunately, our budget was closed when our mop and broom went missing, so we went many weeks without our own supplies. My colleagues were gracious but I did not want to keep asking them daily. Now we don't have to borrow anyone's stuff.

The next lesson will be (1) care and cleaning of our mutual space, and (2) gratitude. Both important life lessons, don't you think?”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Student Paint Party!

    Funded Jan 17, 2024

We have been enjoying the donations this semester in several ways. I set up the classroom like one of those "paint parties," squeezed the paint into paper palettes and we had a great time! The students were so impressed, and happy when they saw the paint!

We also painted some canvases (student choice). I'm so grateful for the donation of this paint, because it will last us to the end of the school year. I'm thinking of using them so the students can paint rocks for a garden, and also to do an abstract painting. I am including a few images from our first student Paint Party.”

  • A Place For Our Books

    Funded Sep 27, 2017

To say we are grateful doesn't describe the joy I feel in my heart. It took a little while, but our bookshelf will be finished soon and I will post the pictures. It feels like and look like we have a real art library!

We are an Art class, but I still infuse literacy into our program. Before we begin any project, I give them a topic or artist on which we will base our artwork. As we read about the topic, I have students jot down vocabulary and look at examples. The books help in this way, especially being that they all have color photos for students to view.

The students have been able to use the books as inspiration and for research. They especially enjoy the Zentangle and Graffiti books that were donated. A few of them used them to design their social commentary for our 'graffiti wall.'

The most beautiful thing is, this donation will benefit all the other students that will come after my current class. Thank you for being a generous donor and for helping us get to a 'legit' level, as the students would say. Our art classroom looks and functions even better than before, thanks to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Art and Literacy

    Funded Oct 22, 2017

We are very grateful for your kind and generous donation! We have been using our Scholastic Art Magazines as a resource and as an anchor to keep us on task.

Before any project is introduced, the topic and artist comes first. This is what we base our art projects on. The Scholastic Art Magazines have been invaluable in that we look at modern art from the last century in full color, read the age-appropriate articles and even view contemporary modern art to compare.

Today, we were able to discuss Georgia O'Keeffe's artwork, read about her life, and learn vocabulary just by using an article from this month's issue! Based on her artwork, we will create our own oil pastel flowers, informed by her techniques. I find that the students enjoy doing work this way, as we are all on 'the same page' and can organically discuss topics.

Some students wanted to continue reading the magazine, and I re-directed them since we had to start our project. They were told that they can read the magazine after the project was done, as an anchor. I"m very happy to have this resource come in every month!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Desperate for Basic Supplies!

    Funded Sep 14, 2016

We are so very grateful for the donations of basic supplies!! We are almost done with our first project: a drawing that includes all 7 of the Elements of Art. The rulers, markers, paper came just in the nick of time. My students were surprised when the boxes were delivered to my classroom. It was like opening Christmas gifts.

Students are able to use the supplies for their other art class, which is an elective -- which means that 300 students are benefiting from these donations. Doesn't that make you feel good?

    We thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Literacy and Art

    Funded May 21, 2015

We are so very excited about the donation of books! My students were surprised by how quickly the proposal was fulfilled. They looked through the books and are looking forward to learning about the other famous artists in them.

I plan to loan out books to do group presentations. A few students have already decided who they will do the presentation on (in September). They were inspired by the artwork they saw in the books and are curious to learn about the lives of those artists.

Since we have just finished taking final exams, we will not be able to use the new books in September, but I can tell you from the experience of having just a few books in the classroom, that this will be a great resource to have for the students. They are naturally curious, and they love to learn 'fun facts' about the artists. In turn, they teach each other through the presentations. I look forward to this project.

Once again, thank you for your generosity and commitment to help our students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Something Extra!

    Funded May 31, 2014

The students were very surprised and happy to receive the projectors, and so was I. They are sturdy, well made and easy to store in the classroom. They even came with light bulbs, so they were ready to use!

We began using the projector just recently to practice focusing, drawing details, etc. It took a little time for them to get used to it, but after a while the students became pros and were able to tutor each other on how to use the projector. We were able to magnify small drawings onto large paper. Next up will be self-portraits! I can't wait to get started.

It is so empowering for them to be able to do that. It builds confidence, leadership skills. These are skills that will serve them and follow them into their future endeavors, not just for the sake of the art projects we are doing.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Visual Motivation

    Funded Nov 15, 2013

We are so grateful for your help! My students were very happy to see the posters and color wheel going up in our room. The color wheel came just in time for our color mixing lessons, and the students used it as reference for their work.

When they tell me they made a mistake, I simply point to the poster and have them read what is written on there: A mistake is an opportunity. They are beginning to do the same when they hear their classmates complain about mistakes. The posters are sturdy and laminated, so they will last a long time.

The mat frames were the biggest surprise for them by far. I put their paintings up on the bulletin board with the frames, and the students felt like they were professional looking. They are very proud of their work! I feel that these materials boosted their confidence, enriched their learning and make our classroom feel like a 'real' art room.

We will forever be grateful for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

  • Help Our Art Room

    Funded Nov 2, 2013

I want to personally thank you for your generous donations that allowed for us to get the supplies we needed to move forward with our projects. We have created beautiful handmade books using the supplies, and will be able to create drawings and other kinds of artwork, through the month of June.

Not only did this project boost my teaching, it also boosted my students' learning. I taught them the ropes, so to speak, and they helped each other achieve success. Most importantly, this experience has taught us that there are people 'in our corner' who value the arts and education, and especially our country's greatest resource; our children.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. L

My Art students are 11th and 12th graders, a bit like small fish in a huge sea. We are a mini-school housed on the 3rd floor in an extremely large high school. This is a high-needs inner-city community, but our students feel safe in our little corner of the world. My students excited about taking an Art class. Many of them will be taking it for the first time. We just got a new art room and it's pretty bare. We need certain supplies to supplement the small inventory we currently have.
