Helping reluctant readers discover books that interest them, will help them change their perception of reading from a unpleasant requirement to something they look forward to. Helping struggling readers find books they are interested in, as well as age and Lexile appropriate, will help them develop their reading skills and confidence, without feeling ashamed of their book choice. We need more high interest and low reading level texts added to our classroom library. Our titles include Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and more. This would help struggling and reluctant reader foster their creativity by to exposing them to a variety of authors, genres, themes, characters, and experiences. This exposure will have long reaching, and life changing benefits visible in students’ writing, reading, vocabulary usage, creative thought, and engagement in learning. Given that our existing classroom library is quiet small, adding many more high interest texts and graphic novels will give students options for reading.
