  • Handbells Needed for Our Third Grade Group Performance

    Funded May 10, 2018

We love the new handbells! Now we have enough handbells for both third grade classes to play a great amount of different songs. The new music is fantastic, and I can't wait to teach my students new songs to play.

Playing handbells requires teamwork and focus - which is great for growing young minds. Also, they sound beautiful, especially when I teach my students harmony. Your help donating to this project means so much to my students - this year and for future years. I love the sound of handbells, and so do my students!”

  • Performing Original Puppet Shows and Turning them into Movies!

    Funded Jun 2, 2018

My third graders adore our new puppets! They are using them to create dialogue for different stories we are reading in class. I am especially excited about the lion and mice puppets we received because my students will be working this week to create and act out an improvisational play about the story I will read to them, The Lion and the Mouse.

My students will also use the puppets to act out an improvisational play about another story I will read to them, King Midas. The puppets are large and wonderfully detailed and we have 3 kings and lots of wonderful people puppets of different skin tones, so everyone will be able to find puppets that they can relate to.”

  • ISTE Conference = New Technology Ideas for our Classroom!

    Funded Nov 3, 2017

Thank you so much for helping me cover the costs to to attend the ISTE technology conference for educators in Chicago this summer. I learned about great apps to use in the classroom and exciting new ways to learn. I became a Certified Newsela Educator, and will be teaching the teachers at our school all about the great ways to use Newsela in our classrooms.

I also met fantastic educators and was able to share my knowledge about DonorsChoose.org with many teachers too at a seminar I presented with three other teachers.

I was inspired from attending this conference, and can't wait to try the great ideas I learned. Without your generosity, I would not have been able to attend the conference. Thank you so much. Chicago is a great city to visit, and ISTE is a superb educator conference.”

  • Third Graders are Making Movies and Publishing Books!

    Funded Feb 14, 2018

My students have dived into our Cut Paper animated movie project with great enthusiasm. I love how they have to problem solve, figuring out how to write dialogue for the voiceover, creating all the characters and props for each scene they photograph, working together as teams shooting each scene - click by click. I also taught them how to edit voiceovers using GarageBand. This project has captured my students (and my) heart! Without your generous help getting us a laptop, we would not be able to record and edit our voiceovers. Thank you again for being a wonderful and generous helper to our classroom. You rock!”

  • Financial Literacy with Hands-On Manipulatives

    Funded Apr 19, 2018

My students were very excited about working on word problems dealing with money when I brought out the jumbo sized magnetic money. I wrote a word problem on the board, and everyone solved the problem on paper. Then I selected one of my students to come up to the whiteboard to show the class with the magnetic money how he/she solved the word problem.

Instead of dreading working with money and word problems, my students really loved the chance to count with the jumbo sized magnetic money. The students explained to the class how they solved the problem, and they asked me to write more word problems on the board!”

  • Take us to the Arboretum to Tour a Tongva Hut!

    Funded Jan 25, 2018

Our field trip to the Arboretum was fantastic. My students learned all about the Tongva Native Americans who used to live there. My students walked inside of a Tongva-style hut and were amazed at how huge the interior was! They saw tule growing in the lake and were taught how the tule was used long ago to cover the huts. We saw lots of peacocks, climbed to the top of a waterfall, and had fun exploring a tree that is native to Australia.

My students also went into a museum filled with kitchen appliances from the late 1800s. They tried to imagine life using an ice box as a refrigerator, a wood burning stove, and a triangular ice cream scoop. Your help donating to this project means that my students experienced a fantastic learning experience!”

  • Hands-On Science with Painted Lady Butterflies!

    Funded Apr 15, 2018

Our Painted Lady Butterfly project has provided many days of observation and wonder! The caterpillars arrived in small containers. We had so many that we hope we will be able to release around 40 butterflies into our garden! We planted the Mallow plants in our garden because we found out that Painted Lady butterflies love Mallow plants. We hope the butterflies will decide to lay eggs and continue the butterfly cycle in our garden.

Each of our caterpillars have grown to be around 2" long. Many have transformed into a chrysalis. We hope to see butterflies at the end of this week or early next week! We look forward to releasing these wonderful butterflies into our garden soon! Thank you so much for helping us learn the butterfly life cycle in our classroom!”

  • An Annual Subscription to Reflex Math to Practice Math Facts!

    Funded Apr 5, 2018

Thank you so much for helping our class have an annual subscription to Reflex Math! I have never seen such excitement for learning math facts with any other program. What I like best about Reflex Math is that it is customized for each student. It knows when a student has memorized math facts and moves on to new facts. I love that students can either learn multiplication and division or addition and subtraction. That means that when my students move up to fourth grade they will have math fact fluency . The fluency is not just for fourth grade, but for life!”

  • Learning about the Tongva and Other California Native Americans

    Funded Oct 18, 2017

Thank you so much for helping us get the books about the Tongva Native Americans. This tribe lived in our city and the coastal regions for many years. Unfortunately, our school textbook does not focus on this tribe. The book explained that many Native Americans used natural resources to make tools and hunting objects. This inspired my students to go to our school garden to find natural resources such as rocks, leaves, and sticks to make tools and hunting objects. They were so excited to create their objects. These books will be used for many years. Thank you so much!”
