Students today, even those who are just learning the English language, are typically very motivated by and capable of using all forms of technology. My students will be highly motivated to use the Kindle Fire HDs to listen to books independently. They will be able to listen to all different genres of books that are related to the curriculum and are of high interest to them personally. Through the use of the Kindle Fire HDs in a listening center, my students will develop literacy skills such as fluency and vocabulary acquisition as well as a love of reading! They will be able to engage with books that they may not be able to read independently but can still discuss, learn from and enjoy. They will repeatedly listen to what fluent reading sounds like and become familiar with print as they follow along in the books. Many of my students do not have books at home or parents that speak English. The more opportunities they are provided with to experience the English language and literature in the classroom, the more they will learn and grow!
