  • Classic Novels Literature Circles for AP English Literature

    Funded Jul 22, 2015

My AP Literature students were excited to receive their books today. We are in week two of class, and are just starting academic analysis of literature. These books will be part of our self-selected literature circles later this fall. Students are already holding the novels and flipping through them to get an idea of which ones they would like to read and explore further.

With our library currently under construction, these novels will provide students with access to classic literature that they wouldn't have until spring due to construction.

    Thank you so very much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

  • Read Around the Room: Who Wants to Read at a Table Anyways?

    Funded Mar 1, 2015

I want to thank you for donating to this project, which was requested by my students. They asked specifically for lap desks to use on the floor and yoga balls in my classroom. The students appreciate being able to move around the room and work in whatever location makes them more comfortable.

There are five students using the lap desks right now as I type this. They are working on the Chromebooks I have in my classroom to finish a research paper for psychology. I can see their focus as they are sitting all over my room working.

The lap desks have also helped my English students because they can write in their notebooks while sitting on the floor. It really does make accomplishing their tasks easier.

I have already used the demo version of the class magazine, and I am excited to have a full-year subscription to work with next year.

Thank you again for your generous donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

  • This Did Not Come Out How It Was In My Head. Can I...

    Funded Jan 28, 2015

The last of the stencils and supplies came today. Of course the students were excited to get the last box and open it. It was the table bins for supplies.

These bins will greatly reduce the traffic in certain areas of the classroom while cutting down on the off-task time spent getting materials and waiting in lines. Now each table set has their own bin to keep markers, scissors, glue, colored pencils, and ink pens in.

The students are excited to get working on their next poster projects, so they can use the stencils. They have already begun to look through the different sets and talk about how much easier they will make such posters.

    Thanks you so very much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

  • On the Road to National Board Certification

    Funded Feb 19, 2015

The opportunity that you have provided for me is priceless. I cannot put into words how wonderful it is to have the support of others when it comes to my classroom. I needed this positive boost this week.

I am so thrilled to be able to have a device to work on at home when it comes to not only training and videos but also to research topics and best practices for my classroom.

These books are so wonderful; what teacher doesn't ADORE new books. I am having a very difficult time trying to decide which one to read first. I want to devour them all as quickly as possible.

I am so thankful to be part of this professional development pilot program, and I hope you keep on giving to my projects and the projects of others.

    Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

  • Paying for College and Becoming Wealthy PSAs

    Funded Jan 26, 2015

My students were excited to get some books about making money to look through. As we begin our personal finance unit, students need informational texts to sink their teeth into. These text will form part of our culminating project, which will result in the students writing, directing, and producing their own public service announcements on financial literacy.

I am excited for my students to gain important reading skills and stamina while gaining information that they can apply to their lives now and in the future. Not only will these text work this, but they will continue to have use year after year.”

  • College Readiness with Debt Free U

    Funded Jan 14, 2015

From the moment that my students heard that this project was funding to today when I had them write thank-you letters, this book has been a buzz around my classroom. This groups of students is incredibly excited to sink their teeth into this project in the coming weeks.

I wish that I had been given this book as a junior in high school because, I like to think, that it would have changed my life drastically. College is important, but it is also expensive. I want to help students make not just good choices but great choices. This project is leading us in that direction.

Know that this projects would not have been possible without your donations. Thank you from me, my students, and their future selves.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

  • Getting Creative with Writing and Texts

    Funded Jan 19, 2015

My students have used these resources to work on notebooks in civics and economics. We frequently cut out notes sheets into significant shapes, which now happens much quicker since we have enough scissors for everyone. Also, we add notes and feedback on each others' notebooks with the sticky notes. They make these notebooks their own, which has aided in learning and retaining.

The large post-its have been used to make posters of different psychology topics and readings in both psychology and English. These have made it so I can display student work and information the students need in a clear and visible way.

Thank you so very much for your donations to my class. It means the world to my students and their futures.”

    With gratitude,

  • Comfort in Reading...No Napping!

    Funded Nov 25, 2014

The students love these cushions and pillows! The cushions have been a sought after item in every class, and being as we are working on exams, they want a cozy place to study. I have students working on exams while using them on the floor. With clipboards I can have students use these for many assignments. I have them on the floor and under tables reading and working on computers.

These items have allowed me to redesign my classroom. I now have desk spaces along with floor space for students to work on assignments, assessments, or collaborative projects. The students have made it a point to tell me how much they enjoy these items. They also tell me that it makes my room a much more pleasant place to be and hang out.

We most recently used these cushions as a place to sit on the floor while completing blankets for a service learning project in our civics classes. The students were able to spread their materials out and work comfortably on putting these blankets together for those in need. The students worked much faster on the floor than the groups that were sitting at the tables in hard chairs.

Clearly their comfort in important to them and to you. I truly believe that this project has changed the feel of my room for the better. I cannot thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

My students are high school age. Some are college-bound, but many of them are not. We live in a high poverty area where a large portion of our student body k-12 is on free or reduced lunch. By the time students reach me, many of them have jobs or are caring for younger siblings. I want to make my room a comfortable place where they can just relax and learn while not having to worry about all the things going on outside of the building.
