  • Access to Achievement

    Funded Jan 7, 2017

Thank you so very much for supporting this project for my students. I am so happy to make students personally responsible for their grades. In addition, my classes are benefiting from applications that are only available on iPad devices. We are going to also be using the iPad for learning stations. I can be using it as a small group listening station. Anytime we get new technology it is a blessing for students because they are living in the digital age.

We thank you very much for your donation and support of our classes.”

  • Organized Space of Our Own

    Funded May 5, 2017

All of our materials have arrived. The students are most excited about the letter tray that I now have sitting on my desk as the inbox they requested. Students now have a set location to submit their assignments to me; we all feel so relieved to have this option.

Students are working on creating list of activities that we could buy or make task cards for, which will be stored in out photo boxes. I will take their lists and requests to build collections over summer vacation.

We are also excited about the wall calendar, which will take us through first semester. We love that it will show us the whole first semester on one document. Students are already anxious to begin filling in the school calendar on it.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Koves

  • Access to Achievement Part II

    Funded Mar 3, 2017

Thank you so very much for supporting this project for my students. I am so thrilled to support students in becoming more personally responsible for their grades. In addition, my classes are benefiting from a dedicated computer as we are not yet 1:1 and have to share the school devices with other classrooms. We are going to also be using the Chromebook for learning stations. I can be using it as a small group listening station. Anytime we get new technology it is a blessing for students because they are living in the digital age.

We thank you very much for your donation and support of our classes.”

  • Lockdown Drills are Not an Annoyance

    Funded May 4, 2017

Thank you so much for providing funding for a small set of these books. The students have already grabbed copies of this book from the stack. Finding a book that so many of them want to read is a challenge. Columbine is a book that will help them see clearer an event that happened before their time but that impacted the education system that they are a part of every day. Also, as more students read the book, I am confident that they will continue to recommend it to other students. I hope to see the reading fire ignited.”

  • Secondary Book Clubs

    Funded Mar 29, 2017

We have our little white boards up outside out classroom with the books that we are currently writing on them listed. They are already sparking conversations with students. The students have also successfully completed their Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition national test, and the pens were so nice to have as many students do not regularly carry a pen. The students also appreciate the post it notes as they are working on reading seven books before the end of the year, and they want to mark items as they read. Thank you so very much for your support of my classroom. We are all very excited about t”

  • Learning Stations Abound

    Funded Mar 10, 2017

Thank you so very much for supporting my classroom. I was so thrilled to get these items so quickly as they will fill a real need in my classroom.

I am especially excited about the BabyLit picture books of the classic novels that we read. I think they will make great paired texts for the actual books. In addition, they will make an amazing book display within the classroom.

Our classroom is in desperate need of headphones. We recently did a scavenger hunt on infographics and some students had to skip around because I did not have enough headphones for all of them to use at the same time.

    Thank you so very much.”

  • Meditation and Yoga to Our Futures.

    Funded Aug 5, 2016

Stress is a real issue for high school students. They stress over school, friends, family, work, and future plans. The students were thrilled on the first day to walk in and see a collection of brightly colored yoga mats for them to use. It gave them a sense of excitement about the real-life application for our psychology class.

The books and journals are another source of excitement as they are beyond what students normally do in school. We will start the one sentence happiness journals soon. The journals to wreck have already been a ton of fun.

We have gotten daily use out of the tall whiteboard already. Students love that it is movable and that they can stand at it while working.

Thank you so very much for helping to make my classroom healthier and more engaging.”

    Funded Sep 17, 2016

    "Smile. Sparkle. Shine."

If you have ever been on a pompon team or had experience with one, you know that these are the words we live by. Every performance is built around these words. During competition, these three words are used as encouragement between teams. These three words are what pompon is all about.

Pompon teams have recently become more and more focused on changing their appearance from past years. There are new uniform styles, hair styles, makeup, and the use of performance jewelry is now necessary. Appearance is a category in itself on a judges score sheet.

Our team is made up of wonderful girls from a variety of backgrounds and we try to keep the financial burden to a minimum for their families. These girls work hard day in and day out to improve their skills and they are a joy to watch perform. They have the word "smile" nailed. Their beauty "shines" in each performance. They just needed their "sparkle". Because of the generous donations we received, they now have that. We are now able to send our girls out on the performance floor feeling confident in their uniform appearance and knowing that they will have a top score in this category.”

  • Capturing Moments That Last a Lifetime

    Funded Jun 30, 2016

This camera set is the highlight of the start of the year. I have a lot to learn, but the students are going to help me figure out all of the manual settings. This is a much better quality of camera than we have been using previously. The transition from camera phones to a high-quality DSLR camera is a new challenge and learning opportunity.

We are starting a J-term this school year where students can spend two weeks learning about an area of interest to them. The students and I have talked about creating a photography course during this J-Term. We will use the DSLR to take images for the school social media pages.

Photography is a skill that just about everyone can use as an adult in their daily lives regardless of the device they have on hand.”

  • Senior Mystery Trip Rewards Those Moving On

    Funded Mar 23, 2016

The Senior Mystery Trip is a fun filled event planned for the graduating class. The trip is planned by a parent committee and is completely kept a mystery to the students. This year we have planned a three day event; they will board the bus on Friday in the early am and we will return on Sunday in the late afternoon. Although I can not share where we are going, as it is a mystery, I can share that the bags and snacks that we received from the grant is greatly appreciated.

We will be using the bags for their t-shirts and other goodies, papers and such being used on the trip. The snacks will be used during the bus trip, during rest stops, to break up the trip. We hope that this trip will give many students the opportunity to see many new things and quite possibly, to see beyond the Michigan border. Again, the committee and I appreciate greatly your donation. The CCC Class of 2016 will surely enjoy their trip and the bags will definitely make their travel easier.”

My students are high school age. Some are college-bound, but many of them are not. We live in a high poverty area where a large portion of our student body k-12 is on free or reduced lunch. By the time students reach me, many of them have jobs or are caring for younger siblings. I want to make my room a comfortable place where they can just relax and learn while not having to worry about all the things going on outside of the building.
