Scholastic News Magazines will be used in a variety of ways in our classroom. The videos that accompany the magazine will be used to hook and build background knowledge for the students before they start reading. Students will have opportunities to read the articles as a class, in small groups, and independently. During this time we will work on students' literacy skills by focusing on key vocabulary words found in the text. To build reading comprehension students will participate in close reading activities, in addition to developing their writing skills by writing about the topics we are learning about. Most importantly Scholastic News creates a generation of informed citizens. Having the opportunity to study current events helps students understand the importance of people, events, and issues in the news. Students develop into informed citizens by engaging in the topics they read about and discussing what they have learned with classmates and their families at home. This practice positively affects students reading habits and encourages lifelong news readers.
