Scholastic Magazine and Must Know Magazine have real examples of how Math is used in our daily lives and the world around us. I am striving to get my students to see that the Math is something that does not go away when you leave the classroom, but will a skill they will use for the rest of their lives. Math can open doors to a future that many have not thought was possible for them.
Contributing to my project will allow my students to engage in interesting and relevant Math practice that will encourage and foster Math achievement in my diverse classroom. In my class we recently looked at a sample Scholastic Magazine that discussed the increase in cost of tennis shoes. My students were engaged and we had very meaning discussions about future cost, percentages and budgeting . Regular textbooks are usually dated by the time we get them, but Scholastic allows the students to see Math problems and articles that are relevant to them and not some problem written about movies or albums written 5-10 years ago.
The Must Know Magazine will also be used to help bridge gaps in our student's learning and help them be more successful in and out of school. I have a group of students that have not been successful in Math for several years and I am working to fill in their gaps in Math understand so that they can be more successful and confident in the future.
