Learning Happens With Flexible and Comfortable Seating!

Funded Sep 2, 2018

This year is my first time using "flexible seating" for second graders. The students and I decided that personal desks were important to them, so they have a specific spot to keep their school books and supplies. With that said, our "flexible seating" supports the learners in my room. They can work anywhere in the room using the flexible seating from donorschoose.org. The students choose where they will sit and what they will sit on for a month. They are thoughtful and select the types of seating that fits who they are as learners. Some of the students choose seats that are cushiony and comfortable. While others prefer seats that bouncy and require balance. They also consider several factors-location, and who they want to sit by-when they choose the place where they want to work for the day.

The day the supplies came the students were very excited. They cheered and agreed that this year would be fun. The students love the blue donut-shaped seats the best, and yoga mats come in a close second.

My next steps will be to purchase rugs, other types of seating, replace some seating as well as buy furniture to store the students' school books and materials. I also teach executive functioning skills of time, space, and organization; therefore, I want to combine flexible seating and executive functioning to develop a classroom that provides and nurtures class mantra of a growth mindset. I am fortunate that the donors contribute to creating a class environment where students have choices on how they want to learn.”

With gratitude,
