A 2013 report from the Institute of Medicine concluded that children who are more active “show greater attention, have faster cognitive processing speed and perform better academically than children who are less active." So many students struggle to remain seated and focused during the school day, and my 7 and 8 year old students are no exception to this. Currently, we have a couple stools and desk foot bands and I have seen a major positive impact in our students like decreased frustration and increased work completion. Slight movement like rocking, bouncing, or kicking allows students to keep their bodies in motion all while keeping their minds focused. The materials I'm asking for in this project will give students to ability to take charge of their learning by allowing them to select a seating option that works best for them. I am hoping that these additional options will mean that no student in my class has to go without.
